Exclamation Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

Alright so i beleive my head is cracked on my 2.2L. It might just be a bad head gasket though, whatever. Now that the truck is gonna be down for a bit, i figured id do what i wanted to do with it to make more power, so here goes.

-56mm TB (whats the easiest way to get this?)
-E-Fan (what model Taurus years are ideal?)
-Underdrive Pulleys (i still need to call ASP)
-Port and Polish on the head (anyone know average cost of this?)
-MSD Coil Packs (are these worth it?)
-Cam swap from 96 or 97 s10/sonoma 2.2L
-I already have an ebay intake with a K&N filter so im good there...
-I also have a flowmaster muffler on there so thats done...
-I already have MSD 8.5mm sparkplug wires...

Anything else? My brother keeps telling me to get a header too but thats a big chunk of money to tack on to the overall cost i think. Would that be smart to do given the rest of the stuff thats gonna be done? What are the best spark plugs to use as well (i wanted iridiums)? Im on a budget so keep that in mind. Thanks.

yes, i believe that's the fan you're looking for, but you're getting robbed. IMO. No fan is worth fifty dollars to me unless it makes me breakfast. the dimensions are about right

i KNOW i've seen threads on every one of these topics...check them out. It takes me on average one to three months of reading threads per mod i do....so i wouldn't jump into anything quick. that and i'm not a fan of doing everything at once, so if something doesn't work you know where you screwed up, i've had it happen

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

it is those threads that ive been reading for months that have helped me come up with that list. Ive been wanting to at least do the underdrive pulleys and e-fan for a few years now, i just never got around to it.

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

yeaaa it's all little bits and pieces. mostly harder to get the time than the money. the taurus efan works awesome, just that i'm gonna redo it and find a better ignition source (probably windshield washer and run a cable/fuse holder into it) and run a ten or eight gauge straight to the battery. i also plan on making a seperate less beefy fan for the a/c too in the future, one that draws a bit less current than this one, i only use low setting and it cools great. usually my voltage is at 14.4 at night, it goes down to mid 13's with the fan on, a good amount of strain, so it makes me wonder if it's because i tapped in at the spot for the rest of the truck acessories, or what. I'm probably going to upgrade the wire from the alternator to the battery sometime in the spring too when i do a bunch of rewiring

do you have a pick a part yard near you? you can find those tb's and fans dime a dozen there, and at good prices.

I would spend the money on the exhaust header. $220 for an OBX stainless steel header with a lifetime warranty. Definitely one of the better mods for the 2.2

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

that's next on my personal list, i've heard great things so it should be here sometime this week. i'm thinking i might be doing a dump before the axle to remove some weight off the exhaust, i don't want a bunch of weight flying around left to right on turns, and putting tension on the downpipe. i've heard people get leaks, i'd like to avoid that. i think helgaiden should consider this mod too on his list

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

Yeah the more i think about it, the more i want the header. Should still pass smog right? (im in CA). It has the port for the sensor i assume? When doing the e-fan, i plan on also buying a capacitor for my stereo system and upgrading "the big 3" wires. The underdrive pulley kit i plan on getting come with a 30% alternator overdrive pulley. Since the underdrive crank pulley is 25%, does this mean that overall alternator output will be 5% more than what i currently have it doing?

Also, i have two pick-a-parts within a few miles of me. What toold would i need to go looking for a fan and throttle body? (i figure finding a 96-97 camshaft would require more work than i can do alone easily).

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

K so i found this header on ebay, is this what i should be looking for?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tchlink:top:en

or this one since i guess it costs a little less...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-E...item27aeffecee

Also, what are the torque ratings for the headbolts?

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

One more thing to verify. A 70.5 inch belt is required for running underdrive pulleys with AC right? 25% underdrive crank and 30% ASP alternator pulley is what im looking at. I might get the JET pulley since they seem to have them on hand and would have to wait for an ASP crank pulley since its made to order but not sure yet.

Something else to add: is a 180* thermostat recommended for this? Especially running an e-fan setup? It gets ridiculously hot here in the summer if that helps.

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

For the fan, take a few wrenches, i think open wrenches would of been useful. i just used vice grips since i had only deep sockets, i forget what size it was. take some snips to cut as much wire off as you can, it goes into a relay block so you can only get like a foot and a half. i think a flathead to take some weird plastic nubs out.

for the intake, i think a flathead to take off the intake , and a 10mm for the bolts that hold it to the manifold.

for the summer, i'll probably be putting in a 180 stat. right now i have a 195 stat for the winter, and no issues. i guess i'll play that by ear and see how the temp works out in the summer. if i lived in florida, no doubt in my mind i'd put in a 180* stat, don't want any headgasket problems

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

Looks like i wont be doing a port and polish. A few people i talked to say it'll change the powerband enough to the point where i lose torque to gain HP. Likely in the higher RPM range. I still want to keep this somewhat efficient on gas lol. I couldnt find a 96-97 camshaft in time either so the rebuilt head is ready to go back on @_@

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

Having head ported is one of the best thing you can do to the motor. Power is power, just where you'll get the most at.

Top end - hp
Low end - tq.

You won't lose tq with port and polish, you'll gain them both very well. They will be best mod to do. There will be couple stages of getting them done, to where you can use stock valvetrain or required to upgrade due to size change and accomdate to fit and hold well for higher rpm.

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

ah. Oh well, maybe next time. The head is already back with the mechanics. I guess you're right that i wont lose torque, but im lookin for something that gets up to speed quickly and if the powerband gets moved around and the torque is higher in the power band, might not be exactly what im lookin for. You're still right im sure, but with the money im saving from the port and polish im gettin the header.

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

Have you thought about a header?? i ordered an obx last night, been trying to decide for a month or two which one i wanted. i read about the dna and wasn't sure about that, sure is a cheap price, maybe they'll last maybe they'll fall apart, didn't wanna risk it, i ordered my pullies 126 shipped going to get my belt soon, i've done most the stuff from the site, (see sig) but i would like to get a diff motor built, better parts maybe push more hp i'll look in to the port and polish as well...

Re: Laundry list of things to buy to beef my engine up

yeah header was ordered (said that in my previous post) :P

waiting on that. Gonna do the header, e-fan, and pullies all in one shot i hope. Right now i gotta flush the radiator and drain the block and run some cleaner through there to try to get any sludged/contaminated dexcool out of the system.

try putting a water hose in the raid and take off the return hose from the heater core that should get a good bit. then let it run.
