Intake Questions
I want to modify my intake. Is there anyone out there with some pictures of what it should look like when finished?
By changing the intake, will it effect how I smog test or not? I am due to get smogged for my registration in a couple months and don't want to mess that up. I know K & N makes a kit, but it cost's some bucks. What else has anyone done instead to save some money? If you modify your intake, what do you do with the oxygen sensor? Do you just tuck it away somewhere or do you have to hook it up???? I'm just checking to see what I need before I get too deep and screw things up. thanks |

Re: Intake Questions
Some say use the black pvc pipe, that pretty cheap, or the chromeintakes off ebay are popular here as well.

Re: Intake Questions
I already have the K & N filter in the stock set up and haven't noticed much of a difference. I'm not looking for more power, I just want a smoother running truck and from what I have read, this mod can help do that.
What are the pro's and con's to doing this mod? |

Re: Intake Questions
The biggest part of making an air intake is to get rid of that stock tubing/silencer that is supper restrictive. Mine is ghetto as shite with 3" PVC hose a white PVC street elbow, K&N Filter and 3" plumbing adapter. You do need to reinstall both the air sensor as well as the PCV breather tube. You could just put a breather kit on your PCV but it's cheaper to just get a gromet and keep the little plastic tube.

Re: Intake Questions
[quote=S-10Driver]i've done it. well, i cut the air box and allready had a k&n filter in it. taking the silencer off pretty much just makes the intake louder but the filter / air box mod will help a little w/ mpg and little bump in hp (not much)
Have you looked inside the silencer? That thing it a maze. I can't believe that taking the entire thing out would only make it louder. It does get louder with out it on but I'd have to argue that there are some better gains, albeit small, with running a smooth direct path from filter to throttle body. Re: Intake Questions
There are no gains in a CAI on a stock 2.2L. I've track tested it, truck ran the same with a CAI and the stock intake on. It was also tested on two other 2.2L, no gains were found in changing anything before the intake manafold (including the TB).
However, if you feel that you really, really, really want one; then I would suggest either the Voolant or the K&N. If you have a little bit of skill, you can make one out of aluminum or ABS plastic (the two best choices). |

Re: Intake Questions
My friend has a 1998 Sonoma, and he got a whole new intake off of ebay for 87 bucks. He got the filter and bought a chrome tube from auto zone, looks JUST like the K&N Fuel injection performance package, just chrome instead of black. He has gained about 1/4 a car length over me in acceleration, and usually slowly pulls away, SLOWLY pulls. And his gas consumption improved. He took of the old intake completely, and the tube comes off the throttle body and curve, then angles down and the filter sits where the old air box was.

Here's mine, made it with part of an intake off ebay and some exhaust tubing...just finished. It works pretty good and sounds good too.
