Inline Fuel Pump Installation

I thought I would put this info up in case anyone wishes to do this mod in the future. I would also like to thank the members that helped me figure this out.

Parts you will need:

1.) MSD fuel pump. Part #msd-2225. Price 94.70

2.) hose clamps for fuel line.

3.) fuel line.

4.) 8 gauge wire.

5.) wire ends.

Tools you will need:

1.) wire cutters

2.) flat end screwdriver

3.) clip-ring remover

4.) hose cutters

5.) small 1/4" drive deep socket set.

First thing to do on the install is to take out the stock pump. once removed, locate the black electric motor in the bottom of the pump, and remove it. there is also a brown bendy-straw looking hose that runs down to it. Remove that as well. now cut yourself a straight piece of fuel line to replace the bendy-straw one that will go down to the bottom of the tank.

If you do not remove the black motor in the stock pump, the new fuel pump will have to work too hard to pull the fuel through the old fuel pump, and the truck will stall... trust me. And if you do not put a new fuel line in there, it will not reach to the bottom, and you will run out of gas before you actually run out of gas.

next, re-install the old fuel pump with clip ring. keeping the old fuel pump in the tank will ensure that your gas gauge will still work and so you don't have a huge hole in your tank.

Now find a place to mount your new fuel pump b a section of the fuel line that is straight. you can use the mounting hardware or just zip-tie it on. Make sure you have a rubber pad between the pump and the surface to minimize damage to the pump from bumps and to quiet any pump noise. Be sure to note the directional arrow on the pump when mounting so that you don't end up trying to pump fuel out of your motor and into your tank...

The next part is fun but remember to put out your cigarette before doing this. Cut the fuel line(the larger diameter line is the send) a few inches past the new pump on each side. Since the stock fuel line is small, and not very flexible, you will need to use new fuel line(I purchased mine for a couple bucks at ace hardware) to bridge the gab between the stock line, and the new pump. Make sure to buy line that has an inner diameter the same or barely smaller than the outer diameter of the stock line and new pump. Cut the line and install it using hose clamps.

Note: make sure to tighten the hose clamps well or the presure in the line generated by the pump will spray fuel all over your truck... which I also now know about.

The stock fuel pressure regulator will work with this pump, so make sure you mount the pump BEFORE the regulator, and re-attach the return fuel line or else the new pump will burn up and shut off.

Now it's time for the electrical work. It's way simpler than I thought it to be too so don't worry. There are two electrical prongs on the pump. They are labled + and -

The negative needs to be grounded out to the frame. Do this by cutting a lenth of wire long enough to run to a sturdy bare metal portion of the frame. You can use the little wire ends with loops on the end and small screws, or just solder them on. Be sure not to over-tighten the electric prongs on the fuel pump, as they are made of a really soft metal and will break off. I broke one of them off and had to solder the wire straight to the pump wich looks like crap now so be careful!

Now, for the positive, you will need to locate the large gray wire with the white connector end that goes into the stock fuel pump. Again, it is the gray wire connected to the white connector(the one with 4 wires, not 3) Cut the gray wire, and extend it using more wire. Run this to the positive on the new fuel pump and secure it with the provided nut AND lock washer. The lock washer is important because you can not tighten this nut too much or it will break off as I mentioned before.

Now you should be good to go. Start it up, and make sure fuel is not spraying everywhere BEFORE you go on a test drive.

It should look something like this when done, however I was in a hurry, so the install is kind of messy:

Re: MSD fuel pump installation

1. 8 bolts holds the bed, remove em

2. gas cap, 3 bolts surrounding the gas cap

3. disconnect bulb wires in rear of bed

4. 2 guys or more to hoist bed up and move
it on jackstand or ground(softly)

5. IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!

get ohmmeter to see if you are getting power to fuel pump, remove the 4 wire clip harness(top of fuel pump as 2 harness clipping, 1 is 4 wire and other is 3 wire) and GRAY wire is what turns fuel pump on, turn key on and see if you are getting voltage, it should be over 12.0 voltage so make sure your battery is charged or use someone else's

6. disconnect fuel lines and connector to
pump to remove the pump

7. remove inner fuel pump and the hose
attach to it as well up to fuel pump which you replace with hose from auto zone, I forgot the size but I'll check or you can take it there and get tight fitting size, make sure hose is long enough from top of fuel pump to bottom of gas tank

8. remove other object of the fuel pump which gets in way and slows the pump

9. put fuel pump in

10. find a location you want to mount pump as long its BEFORE the fuel filter and mount safe and hidden(you dont want people able cut pump wire or hose) and secure it with hardware it come with or whatever you have as long its securable

11. the gray wire that goes into 4 wire clip harness on top of fuel pump, cut it and connect to fuel pump(same gauge or slightly larger is fine, wiring extension is needed depending where you locate the mount) and be sure to light tighten the nut to pos/neg terminal of fuel pump, Xtremelyslow had his came off easy and solder on, I tighten mine good enough and still fine

12. using same size or larger(I use 10awg) to ground the fuel pump, just really short, drill and grind the ground hole and bolt it in

13. the fuel pump, cut the top fuel connector(anywhere of the rose but not the fuel rail) get hosing that tight fit on both end of fuel pump and lengthen to wherever fuel pump is from and use screw clamp or whatever to tighten hose and ensure no leak

14. have a friend to watch your fuel line/pump

15. test start and ready to stop in case your installation sucks

16. motor runs, your problem is stock fuel pump is bad

17. motor doesn't run, check your connection and installation. Otherwise problem wasn't fuel pump

that put out
255LPH pump (rated at 43 psi and 13.5 volts

Approximate flow is 43 gph (282 lb/hr) gasoline (specific gravity 0.788) @40 psi and 12 volts/5.4 amps

both are good so either works for the cost, great find man

Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

IMMEDIATELY PAD THE ZIP TIES ON YOUR FUEL LINE! Those plastic ties WILL CUT YOUR RUBBER HOSE! DO NOT MOUNT TWO HOSES TOGETHER! The friction will rub through both hoses with vibration!

Use a soft foam padding between the hoses and between the zip ties and fuel lines.

Three months later and not a bit of damage to the lines from the zip ties or from lines rubbing togather.

Yes, you can also look in www.summitracing.com, there are some other that are as good or better with lil more $ such as

Aeromotive, MagnaFuel, Mallory

Unsure how good summit, accel inline fuel pump are, but those 2 MSD and Walbro are good

to use fuel cell, you'll have to have fuel pump mount on it(then recommend inline fuel pump) hook em up just as it was on stock tank but with new lines long enough to fit, you'll be ok

no need for fuel cell, its mounted outside, just gut the old one out and use fuel hose straight from inner top of fuel hole into bottom of tank length so itll get the fuel as low as the hose goes

it cost $300 because you buying complete fuel pump setup, while if just pump alone, itll be $150 and with many out available better than stock and better, cant go wrong with what is said in the thread

You 4.3 needs more than 43 psi to run properly...you need at least 44 to fire the poppet injectors, and 55-60 to run properly!!! Put in a delco pump and change your fuel filter regularly and you should have a problem.

The msd in the first post puts out a max psi of 85, so wouldn't that work?

I saw in spec AT 30PSI 43GPH > 80PSI 39GPH Which is a broad range, with 80 being high. After teasing my brain a bit (gm lists in grams/sec and KPA)

With a delco pump with a max pressure of 51 psi, flow is 48gph. (47.8888and so on)

at 51 gph, the msd pump theoretically puts out about an estimated 41.5 gph

Even if it has the pressure, it lacks in flow volume rate, which can also cause driveability problems. The engine/injectors especially need a certain amount of psi/volume for proper atomization. if your willing to take the chance and it works out for you, great. I just can see some flex-fuelers and 4.3s having a little trouble.(they run a pump with 55-60 psi) If you have a plain jane 2.2, you will probably get away with it tho.

msd inline has been used on other than 2.2 and no problem, however walbro has been more of popular choice and seein on eBay only $10 extra, well better choice to go with, while flex fuel pump are good to use as well with higher pump flow than nonflex pump

Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

Thanks for the info on using the inline pump.I will be doing it soon.I have a unique problem though.I have to park on a side street and cant do it there(they will have it towed if they see me dropping the tank)What Im wondering is,can I install the pump first, leaving the one in the tank just to get it to my home?(1/8th mile),then finish? It seems to me I could.Let me know what ya think. Thanks! Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

I just want to make sure before I do this. Has there been any problems or issues doing this with the stock tank and modifying the stock sending unit pickup?

I have a 96 2.2 that has 101k and my 2nd in tank is about to die. Hopefully this will help and last longer!

Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

So which Walbro fuel pump would be good to use? I plan on doing some internal motor mods eventually down the road and adding nitrous. Also, what kind of fuel pressure regulator will I need?

Thanks.

You leave the sending unit in the gas tank and just take the pump out. The gas guage runs off the sending unit not the pump. You can have fuel cells with a standard GM sending unit opening, I would suggest that for easy of it all working together

You can use the fuel pump assembly

and install the inline fuel pump in there, but will need filter in before the pump

Cut the wire that goes into ac delco pump and connect to the inline fuel pump, voila, you have one inside the fuel pump assembly without install externally.

Of course, if you plan on going extremely fast, this pump isn't such a bad idea lol

Next to stock ac delco and A1000

Its extremely OVERKILL for 2.2L unless you plan on going 375 rwhp+ then it'll be more handy since Aeromotive 11109 is good for up around there, +/- depending on boost, n/a, spray

Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

A1000

I say go with Aeromotive A11109 if you can, otherwise go with the options above.

Although, do you plan on using e85?

Re: Inline Fuel Pump Installation

i really need a new tank ASAP and dont want to put another factory tank. its raised with the SD crossmember and the front bolts were raised like an inch but it still sits lower then the frame so the plastic just gets eaten up.

From readin above it says the msd 2225 isnt good enough for the flex but on summit.com it says its good for up to 500hp.. i dunno what to do
