Would this fix the fluctuating problem I am having? I just swapped engines ('95 4.3 for the 2.2) and ever since installing the new pump my gas gauge moves around.. Not much, but enough to piss you off.

I dont think it would, but its worth a shot. Is it "floating" like the older trucks used to do?

somewhat, it goes up when I press on the gas, and when I let off the gauge goes back to where it was supposed to be.. lol

I am wondering if the V6 is the same as the 4 cylinder?

would anyone know if the cavaliers have these too? The wreckers around dont have many s10s but thousands of cavs.

Re: If you have a broken gas guage, read this...

I have finally found the buffer "I hope" from a '95 4.3L and I haven't gotten around to installing it, but I did notice another weird thing.

The needle moves around just like the sloshing (spelling?) of the tank. I can hit the brakes about ten times to get the truck to "rock" and the gauge will do the same. So maybe the cluster is bad? idk

Re: If you have a broken gas guage, read this...

EDIT: I believe the 4.3L wiring is different, because I just looked at the buffer and it is 1/2 the size of the one you found. Now I am just thinking about swapping dash harness' and be done with the whole swap.

Re: If you have a broken gas guage, read this...

hey folks,
i was wondering if anyone has managed to pull a part number off of this atrocity. I have a 2000 2wd 2dr 5 speed jimmy and the fuel gauge just took a dump out of nowhere. i pulled the tank and replaced the sending unit; i tested the old one and it was still working but i changed it anyway. I have no idea if the 2000 has it or not but i might as well give it a shot. Perhaps we can send dorman a request since they have a form for it.

This will not work for 98+.

i didn't bother looking for the buffer but i did yank the cluster and take a look at it. There main pcb has a module soldered on with what looks like a small processor of some sort and this might be where the circuitry lies in the later models. I can't be sure, of course. I verified that the pickup works and there is continuity in the gauge so it is still physically ok. Any other ideas for my dilemma? I suppose tracing wires is next.

Sorry man, I can't help with the 98+ trucks. My knowledge is slim with them. I was tracing wires on my truck when I found the buffer. I spent a couple months tracing wires down.

Curious as if anyone has found a solution for a 2000 gas gauge?

Moms Jimmy will go from full to empty and around all the time going down the road. Been broken for years.

no, I dont think anyone has found the solution for 98+ trucks. The only suggestions I have seen are to replace the fuel pump assembly($300).

Won't do any good... it's been done.

Gauge replaced, pump replaced, everything the dealer could do to it has been done under warranty

my fuel gauge in my 99 s10 was broke when i bought the truck and i drove it like that for about a year. i ended up replacing the 4 wire connector that plugs into the fuel pump and my gas gauge has been working ever since.

I found a connector at advance for 11 bucks, is this something that is easily replaced, meaning no tank dropping.

My gauge has been acting up on a 2000 Jimmy for several weeks and is kinda getting annoying, its just not worth the price of replacing a pump or sending unit

Re: If you have a broken gas guage, read this...

I have a 2002 2.2 my gas gauge read 1/4 of a tank when it's empty and jumps around randomly from full to empty. I pulled the sending unit and found that the reason for this was that the circuit board that attaches to the float wears out and it doesn't read right. there is a seller on Ebay "global-automotive" that's selling just that piece for $25 +6 shipping but it only fits the 4.3 v6's from 97-02 it won't fit the the 2.2 (I tried) but I ended up putting it on the bottom half of an old v6 unit then putting that on mine with my pump in it I haven't put it in my truck yet but I'll post back when I do. Just thought I'd share for all the 98+ Guy's!
