How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

I'm gonna try to keep this simple enough for all to understand. unfortunatly i was unable to take pics as i was pressed for time so i'll borrow a few from other sites.

introduction:
Basically a tranny servo is a setup of pistons that apply pressure (using the tranny fluid) onto the bands in the trans to make it shift. The corvette servos have about 50% more apply area than the standard servos which allow for more pressure to be applied to the bands which create a firmer, harder shift. the "vette servos" are the intermediate servos, which mean this will firm up the 1-2 and the 2-3 shift. there is also an aftermarket overdrive servo that will allow you to hold overdrive better and shift harder into it. (but i didn't pick it up)

vette servo is on the right.

The servo i orded came from Orgeon Performance Transmission off of ebay. ($13 + $5 shipping) i totally recogmend this company, they had the servo to my door in no time.

when you open the package this is what you get:

-the 2 servos
- a packet of diagrams
- 2 teflon oil rings
- 2 o-rings

STUDY AND LEARN the diagrams before doing this. having knowledge on how this is assembled helps a ton. the two teflon rings go onto the servo on the left and the RED o ring goes on the other servo. the BLUE one is a new o ring seal for the cover of the servo.

INSTALLATION:

since my truck had 56k miles on it, i decided to go ahead and change the tranny fluid along w/ this swap. just go to autozone and ask for a new tranny filter kit and make sure to get the DEEP PAN KIT (i made this mistake) and pick up 6 quarts of Dextron III ATF fluid. (the tranny takes 5, but you will lose a little more when you remove the servo, + having an extra bottle is good insurence.

this how to is exactly what i followed:

http://www.gmfullsize.com/Tech%20Pag...ServoTech.html

there is another how to online but it does not work for our truck because you cannot remove the servo as one unit. on mine i left the pin and spring in, make sure that the pin is in its perch when you reinstall everything. the biggest PITA was getting the last stock servo out, i had to play around w/ it and the servo pin for a while before it finally came out.

i did my install on a lift (thank you work!) but this can be done in a driveway w/ some jackstands. the higher you can get the truck up the better. doing the install and fluid change it took about 2 and a half hours bymyself. it can be done much faster but i took my time.

RESULTS:

after checkin for leaks and fluid levels (remember to run tranny through teh gears after a fluid change to get an accurate dipstick reading) we took her out on a test drive. the 1-2 shift is much firmer than stock but it's no tire chriping machine. (ya gotta have hp todo that. rofl) but all in all i like it. it may make the truck a hair faster if any, but it feels a little quicker. and i would definatly recogmend this mod if you plan to upgrade the 2.2 (w/ gutlass's turbo kit for example). and if you want a even stronger shift, they sell an even larger piston, but it runs like $80 versus $13. but i would say thats a little overkill for a daily driver.

(p.s.: feel free to ask me any questions about this.)

i have a 00 2.2 auto and the tranny is slipping i know i need a new one but would the vette servos do any good or would it probably cut the life of my tranny? i ordered a shift kit for it already. do u think the shift kit and filter would be suffiecient? i have no skills on trannys. can do anything else but when i opened my first auto i bout crapped my pants n walked off. let the tranny guy do it. lol

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

alot of guys are doing the same thing on the full size trucks... using the vette servo, and I think they are using the same place: Orgeon Performance Transmission

They say that it actually extends the life of the transmission because it doesnt allow the bands to slip as much

as he stated, most people say it will extend the life of the tranny, but if yours is slipping i doubt it'll fix that.

honestly i think a shift kit + a servo might would be a bit much for such a slow truck...but it'll chirp second w/ both put in i'd imagine.

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

kinda off ur guys topic but...mines a 5-speed and it will churp the tires goin into 3rd...think with a centerforce clutch it would grab like that in 4th?

Or would it take putting in a 4.10 rearend to do that

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

Id put in a centerforce stage 2... it will make the truck ALOT more fun to drive

After my experience with my 98 2.2... although buying all the stuff is somewhat expensive (especially if you really dont need to replace it) the stage 2 clutch is one of the biggest difference makers in the 2.2

Before you buy one, you need to figure out what stage you really want...stage 1 is just the disk (i think) and its stage 1... who wants stage 1 when you can have a stage 2 or 3...lol
stage 2 requires a new clutch, disk and id suggest the bearing too.. if you ever need to replace the clutch again, all you need is the disk
stage 3 still requires that you buy all the parts, but if you change your clutch again you will need the whole thing all over again

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

so i am having the same problem with my tranny kinda looking for crisper shifts so a shift kit plus the $15 servos will give me super clean shifts? what kind of shift kit like the one they sell at advane autoparts? and i have taken a auto tranny apart before do u think i could get the old servos out and the new ones in myself? i could always pay my buddy he is a real mechanic but he says it will cost me and then never takes the money. so for like 70 bucks i can get crisp stiff shifts out of my well traveled tranny (165k miles)

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

Id start with just the vett servo... its simple and easy to install.... then if you want more still... then you can do a shift kit... most of them arnt that hard to install, and a good kit will come with instructions

yeah man, same tranny, just a different bellhousing. it's not that hard, the trickiest part is gettin the old servo out between the tranny and floor of the truck. it's a tight fit.

as for doing the shift kit and the servo, like i said before, i wouldn't do it for a daily driver, esp a slow 2.2 like mine.

this mod is VERY popular w/ the full-size trucks, i guess not many s10 guys have done it. there are also even larger aftermarket servos, but i think they are a little overkill. I'm sure u guys w/ 4.3's have some kinda electronic shift improver kit out for yalls trannys...then u could turn the firm shifts off and on.

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

i dont have a shift controller, but i do wanna do the servos and possibly the shift kit. my 4.3 is awesome, but i just feel like when it shifts it takes too long. and when it hits second at 4500 rpm, i think that it could be ALOT firmer. but it is a dd, so im kinda ata a stand still...

Re: How To: 'Vette Servo Install on a 2.2 auto

well the servo doesn't really shorten the shift, maybe a hair shorter, but it makes it firmer.

What the hell are you doing to chirp 3rd? In order to chirp 3rd in my 5 speed 2.2 I would need to be doing 120mph, then drop to third at idle....and I might drag the tires enough for a "chirp"

Or maybe MAYBE around a rotary with it at rev limiter and a fast dump of the clutch...but WHY would anyone want to do this is beyond me.

i'd imagine if ya powershifted it pretty good, w/ some stock sized tires, it would chirp 3rd.

i put a transgo reprograming kit and a 2nd gear servo kit and a new filter and gaskets and i have a 2.2l stock and it will get a 2nd and 3rd chirp and sometimes a 4rth

I seriously doubt that. My 5 speed 2.2 with 4.10s cant even chirp 3rd let alone 4th. I bet it couldn't even chirp in 4th gear if i dropped the clutch at 5,000 RPM.

but good job searching/looking at the stickies

i bet i could get your truck to chirp 3rd, ive done it in an ext cab 2.2 5spd. but i doubt it would do a 3rd gear in the auto thou.
