Theres is a ton of differnt ways to install an electric fan. There is no perfect fan but there are many that work more than hard enough to keep the engine cool. The Taurus fan is very popular as well as a few aftermarket fans which through many failing one me I am now biased to one company. All the fans can be mounted in a few differnt ways and there is no wrong method as long as it holds the fan as close as possible the radiator. This is a very easy mod and can take a few minutes to a few hours depending on your mechanical skill but the result is worth whatever time you put into it.
To remove the clutch fan remove the shroud. Get either the porper tool from a auto parts store. They usually have a free loaner program to get the fan off. Or get a big ass wrench to fit the center nut on the fan and Unbolt it. Some times it takes a few whacks from a hammer on the wrench to pursuade the nut to come off. Now Install the fan with whatever method you would like. Once done for optimum cooling reinstall the shroud
To install the fan there are a variety of ways. You can get some angled steel make some brackets upper and lower and screw them to the upeer and lower radiator support,. and then bolt the fan to that. You can go the Nylon straps route through the radiator like I did. You can make a bracket that will just brace the fan at the bottom and hold it snug at the top with a spring load of the sort. There is no wrong way as long as its secure.
To wire just buy the 20 dollar kit. It has I think 6 wires. they are all color coded.
1. Main power for Relay
2. Main ground for Relay
3. A/C or sometimes called over ride switch wire that you tap into the A/C wire so when its on the fans on
4. Thermostat input wire, they all have some type of thermo switch
5. Thermostat Output wire, There should be 2 wires for the thermo one in and on out
6. Primary fan power +
7. Some have a secondary fan +
Real simple to wire up no big deal. Once you wire up the relay system. Install the fan run the Primary fan power wire from the relay to the fans + wire. Run the ground for the fan to the frame.
If its a set temp style system you donr. Turn on the A/C once the fan turns off to make sure you wired that correctly. If its adjustable you run the vehicle No A/c till the gauge on the dash is at the temp you want it to turn on then you adjust the thermostat switch the fan kicks on.
You will notice the engine is quieter, more responsive, little more tourque, and slightly better milage.
The e-fans that will fit my s-10 at autozone is like $400. does anyone know what the best e-fan i could get for my s10 would be? i know about the Taurus e-fan but whats the latest year Taurus fan that would fit?
Install 3/8 temp sensor---You can tee off for the new sensor. Just unscrew the factory sensor. Install a short 3/8 npt nipple with a tee and both sensors leave the other ends of the tee.Leave the sensor loose enough to let the air out and start dripping while it is running. Then finish tightening. Use an adj temp sensor because the gauge will show the engine is running a few degrees cooler. 1 mark on the temp gauge max. Use BRASS fitting they transfer heat better. If it's an extreme variation in temp on the gauge chances are you have air traped.
Get The Fan Off---To get the fan off use a wrench on the bolt for the pully. Put a rachet in the belt tensioner and allow the wrench to rotate till it catches the rachet. Then take a big wrench to the large bolt going to the fan's clutch. I thought I was going to break the bolt but I've done it twice now with no broken bolt or busted knuckle.
A/C override --- I have a durale kit stock no. 16749 the a/c override wire should be connected to the green wire going to the compressor
12v switch ignition--- Can we start a valid list for Underhood sources to help others attempting to do this so they won't have to run it in the cab?
Theres many ways to do this upgrade. The best way to get your clutch fan off is very simple. And no busted knuckles.Take a long chizle(i cant spell so) place it on top of you clutch fan nut.center it give it a good smack. It well fall off.Just one good smack then you can take your hand and loosen it.On the relays I bought a universal one from my local parts store 7 bucks.I bought a fan from the junk yard 0ff a 2.2 cavalier.I just got back from disney World,I was in traffic for 6 hours 110 degrees with the A/C on never got over 200.For $35 I got my E-fan running.
thanks for the info navy let me know how the install goes and how it works for you.. im still planning on ordering that kit just been on a set back trying to hunt down my fuel smell problem im having.. you just gonna use you stock shroud or you getting that metal one?
I used the stock shroud, I cut it way down so that it clears the fans but still hold down the radiator. As for the mounts, I just used the kit that was supplied and mounted it directly to the radiator. For the week that I have had it, it works like a champ! The only complaint that I could have with it so far is that the ignition lead(yellow wire) on the supplied relay was not long enough for me to run it through the firewall because I tied it into the fuse block and used the power window fuse since I dont have power windows. Once I down load the pics off of my phone, I will post them up!
There's a tonne of talk of multiple different fans here now, I have a pretty simple question regarding them all. I don't have much time between jobs to research as much as I'd like so for basic bang for your buck what's my best route to go for a fan? I don't mind spending money at all but as I browse around I'm seeing fans all over the spectrum. Roughly all the same spec they range anywhere from 30 to 250. I'd like to keep my stock shroud as I prefer the look and for means of simplicity for my heat shield mount for my intake. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm currently driving a 98 Sonoma 2.2l 5 spd.
Thank you!!
I've got this one, bought it new from a member here for $60- great deal!
This fits under the original shroud, bolts with brackets- no zippy ties! and comes with everything you need, also it's big enough for a 4.3.
3 years-no problems.
It say's 1982-1997 but mine is a 2003 and it fits perfect!
• Strongest 15" electric fan on the market
• Consistent cooling regardless of engine rpm
• Lightweight nylon shroud
• Rigid mounting system, no through the core mounting
• Built in controls with adjustable thermostat, A/C relay, and manual switch
• Includes complete instructions

got my fan the other day. I got a new 3.8L 1995 Taurus fan for $77.00 shipped to my door. Have the hold-down piece and have the coolant line splice that holds the temp sensor and the controller.
I am going to start my own thread on the build. I need to know what to trim off the Taurus E-Fan.. anyone have a pic or know a thread that talks about it?

I'm seeing prices all over the place on this, the one above is the cheapest $269.97 but I didn't search too hard!
and as high as $483.67...:haha:
You might try ebay also but it looks like this like many other S10 after market parts is discontinued, so I would call or email on availability before ordering.
Does the fan clutch have reverse threads? I just bought an 03 ext 2.2L 5speed and after 21mpg (75% highway) on my first tank...I'm ready to jump into this mod... Needless to say, I was very unhappy after my first fill-up....Also thinking about a gear swap, but we'll see what the efan and plugs/wires give me. I bought this thing to save gas on commuting over my GTO, but am getting 3mpg worse....so much for 120hp vs 400...what a joke.... Love the truck, but am very unhappy with the miledge.
Reverse threads.. damn not sure. I will go out to the pulley and look in the morning if you still need the info.
I know what you mean about the power/fuel efficiency thing... It is just like mine, only mine is a standard cab auto.. gas guzzler. I am not sure but I have bought a shat-ton of gas in 2000 miles. I am going to start recording mileage better than by the year .
Yeah that whole save money cause of less cylinders is just not that accurate. Especially with the newer engines.
I dyno'd my truck. Yeah.... about that. I made 95 or 96hp. lol I have almost all bolt on mods aside from rocker arms and turbo... and maybe a couple other.
This was a good mod though. I would do it the way I did it. It works, and it is reliable. Sometimes a rarity on these trucks
I always liked the style of the S10. I am a ford guy but I ALWAYS thought the S10 was a damn sharp mini truck.
ok thought that this would be an easy to do thread, but way to many different things going on.
what i have... 96 v6, i have the fan from a 95 taurus i scrapped, and i have a couple relays layin around (they are the firewall relays from the blazer im parting out)
the questions...
1. does the stock fan shroud have to be cut?
2. i am planning on getting the e-fan temp kit from auto zone, is there anything else i need?
3. does that kit keep me from having to tap into the a/c? i dont want to tap into the a/c
4. is different thermostat required?
Just thought I would add this in here. I wired up my fan this morning. I used the wiper motor harness to pull the keyed 12v source from. According to the diagram I pulled, it is the yellow wire going into the plug for the wiper motor.
i have since installed and uninstalled my set up (sold the truck) but i never ever got the damn thing to turn on. i want to put it on my new blazer, but with summer coming up i would like for it to at least come on
Maybe you got a bad fan? All you need is a relay kit, thermostat (adjustable preferred), and fan. If you get a dual fan set up, make sure your relay kit has a provision for a second fan motor.
The fan also should be wired to come on when ever the A/C is on and makes it easy to see if the fan is working, it doesn't guarantee it will come on when it gets warm though as that's a different circuit
the fan is a good one. i pulled it off of the wifes pos taurus wagon before it got scrapped. i had put an a/c bypass on the last s10 and had just connected the wire up. still couldnt get it to come one via a/c
anybody know if the ff dynamics kit will be enough to cool a 2.2L in a Texas Summer dealing with Dallas traffic. I'm talking like 105F, a/c on, bumper to bumper for an hour or more.
Only want to go to mod if it will help the truck cool better, I could care less about the HP, the truck is slow regardless.
Tired of having to turn my a/c off in bad traffic during the hottest part of the day.

I would say call or email the company. They asked me a few questions like if I was going to be towing anything and driving conditions. Sometimes you can get away with just the fans, but if your conditions are more extreme, they recommend a shroud that they make which increases efficiency... I have had zero issues so far with the year that I have had mine installed.
i have a taurus fan with an adjustable tstat and its on the slow setting and it cools better than stock. i had it on high for a day and it cooled it almost instantly
