ebay cold air intake install/review

So i got my cold air intake, it came with a heat shield so i thought that would be the best way to go to prevent any water from entering the intake.

My truck is a daily driver so i cant have an intake on it and then having to worry about hydrolock every puddle i go though or the under spray at a car wash. here is what i did to help reduce and hopefully eliminate the chances of that happening.

out with the old, in with the new

OK, what i used to shield water away from the intake was my old stock floor mats. they are flimsy, old, and i had no current use for them (besides collecting dust), until now.

basically i cut the floor mat in half then trimmed and fitted the floor mat until it covered the areas that let in water. earlier i tested to see if water could inter the intake area by using a power washer, and a standard garden hose fitting. what seemed like good protection from water, turned into HOLY CRAP! the bottom of the driver side radiator let in large amounts of water, so after finding the problem areas i started to make sure water stays out.

here, i used 2 layers of floor mat trimmed and sized. i also used pipe insulation foam to fill the gap between the front clip and the heat shield, it really didnt need it but i just want to make sure.

also i re-installed the stock air box bracket, i couldn't leave that big rectangle hole, the stock air inlet was good enough.

overall, it did increase some top end power, as for MPG i have no idea since i have only had this intake for 2 days.

As for installation, this intake installed better than what i have seen from the chromeintakes' brand. you dont have to make mounting point using a cheap bracket, this intakes is very very solid and for $60 it wasnt much more than the other brand and had a heat shield. Also for you guys with A/C, the intake clears the pulley by 1/2". the intake also comes with foam for the edges of the heat shield, the kit didn't come with any adhesive so i used electrical tape.

Another reason why i like this intake is that its black and it blends in with the engine compartment very well (except for the blue 90º elbow). A chrome one would have blended in also since i polished the ECU, air accumulator, and abs controller.

however, i do need to get rid of that 14" air filter and install a K&N air filter. but for a week or two, this one will be fine.

after a long drive i immediately popped the hood and touched the intake inside the heat shield, the aluminum pipe was cooler than the outside temp. (not a surprise) but the 90º bend area was slightly warm, so it is actually "cold air" on this intake. the intake does get hot though with the engine off for about 5 minutes but thats to be expected.

And i guess thats my install/review from this ebay intake.

mods, if this thread is worthy please move it to the 2.2L performance.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

Wouldnt worry about hydrolock, would worry more about sucking in hot air off engine and the floor mat shielding looks like it will do that, actually some water mist would help keep carbon down inside engine.

I already touched the intake after a nice long drive, it feels colder or as cool as the air outside (62ºF today), the heat shield is doing its job, and yes i am going to worry about hydrolock. for one, its an expensive mistake, and the fact i used foam, and the floor mat to seal off any water will also ensure heat wont be able to get in.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

lol you would have to be up to the windows in water before hydro lock becoming an issue... the stock airbox let in all sorts of water (intake was faced forward thru the grille! had rain sleet snow, etc entering it going 55mph+ )

does look good tho, looks alot better than my chromeintakes one

I have the same one. Good deal for $60 and you didn't have to ghetto mount it.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

Ya you can hear it, it's not crazy loud when you're just driving normally but when you get on the gas a bit it gets louder. Sounds good. At idle it's a little noticeable too but nothing like a vacuum cleaner or anything. I would definately buy this one again if I was in the market for another intake.

In my case i think i only hear it when i stomp on it and the rpm gets 3000+ then i can really hear it, other than that, my exhaust drowns out the noise. If i get under the hood it sounds like any other intake.

yesterday i went though a car wash with the under body high pressure spray and absolutely no water entered the air box. I made sure to go really slow to fully test it out.

Hydrolock is last thing to worry about in this case, ive gone through flooding and mudding and intake still isnt enough for water to go through until the water is just about onto the intake

k and n is just an expensive brand name,,,, it doesn't add any more power and all of those filters are the kind you clean and reuse... so why pay more for a name

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

I don't think it is just a brand name. K&N makes top quality shit, better than the competitors for sure, but does it give you much more of a gain if any at all...not really, so in a way you are right, but K&N quality is much better

Yup, vacuum tubing and there's a place for the IAT sensor. The grommet can be a PITA but not too bad. It comes with all the mounting hardware also and bolts right up.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

That IAT was a pain lol. its hard to stick it in without the grommet falling in. i will get a K&N air filter sometime.

Also i tested out my "water proofing" and went to a car wash with the high pressure under body wash. I stopped when the water was directly underneath for about 15 seconds and absolutely no water got inside the air box. So now I know that if water cant get in, neither will heat. the only exit for air is the space between the hood and heat shield.

MPG wise, i didnt get a real good test because i hot rodded it about 5 times and was really hard on the gas, but there is definitely an increase in the top end.

I started in 1st gear at 10 MPH, then floored it, around 4,000 rpm my rear tires broke loose from the street . I got good tires too (Yokohama avid t4s 95% tread left), but i have never broke loose in 1st gear without popping the clutch. it might have been just a one time thing but now i can chirp the rear tires in second gear.

After all that I got 26 MPG so im really looking forward to this fill up to see the mileage i gained, or didnt gain. I usually drive like a grandma and my driving consists of 85% at 55MPH and 15% at 45 and i do 19.5 miles per day. I will keep you guys posted.

sorry for the long post

I own the K&N cold air intake..I paid $287 from adavance auto parts store. I also just recently bought the one off ebay..should be here in a couple of days. I took off my supercharger off the black truck and now running with the K&N . I do like the K&N because the intake pipe is ALOT shorter that other aftermarket intakes. the air gets to the TB a little bit faster when you step on the peddle . now on a good rainy day...I can still chirp my tires in 3rd. well worth the money..now witht the supercharger..lol...I can spin in all of 3rd gear.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review ::UPDATE!

alright, after burning a little over half a tank I now get 27 MPG in my truck

before was 25-26 MPG. before the intake the only way i could get 26 mpg+ was to coast like crazy to every stop light. So even though its 1 MPG gain, its still worth every penny and eventually will pay itself off.

What kinda miles are you getting to the 1/2 tank? I suppose I should ask how big your tank is too.

Electrical tape works well if your planning to use the foam that comes with the heat shield. it holds on the foam great and blends in with the shield.

ohh just a tip, put the air filter on first BEFORE you install the intake but dont tighten the clamp. I didnt and end up taking the intake back off just to put the filter on.

I know your not suppose to judge MPG by where the needle is but usually i get 100-110 miles or so on a 1/4 tank and 200 or so at 1/2 a tank. pretty much its 103 miles per 1/4 a tank. so just by that i can get a estimation how my mileage is doing. then i go fill up and do xxx miles ÷ the gallons it took to fill up to the 1st click.

I think i have a 15 gallon tank. I know for sure i dont have an 18 gallon one.

Heat will get to your filter as long as there is a gap between heat shield and hood.

I think I'm going to have to try that out and see what kinda miles I'm getting. I don't have pullies or an e-fan so I know it's not going to be as good as I wish.

I need to get pulleys and an efan then my mileage would be even better. i still have the stock O2 sensor (bank 1) at 111,000 miles, i really need to replace it sometime even though its not bad, it would be nice to have a new one.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

Ya I hear you. I just turned over to 100K miles and I have the stock o2 sensor in bank 1. I replaced the other one (bank 2) b/c it was throwing a code and I had to get an emissions check on it. I know bank 1 is the one that has an effect on mileage, but it's an automatic vehicle failure for emissions in my county in ohio if I have a check engine light on.

My next project will probably be pullies. I'd do the e-fan next but I want to do as much research as I can before I decide how I'd like to do it.

Got the intake installed along with no O2 sensors (finally). The intake went in easy and is pretty sturdy. Sounds good too lol. Thanks for the heads up on this thing, 100% happy with the product.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

I had to bump this thread because the seller changed his name, or being sold by someone else.

Now the name you want, the new seller is imperialautoshop. search his name in ebay, there you will find the intake.

if your lazy search/click 99-04 CHEVY S10 4CYL 2.2L HEAT SHIELD AIR INTAKE 02 03

hope that helps if you were trying to get this intake before but only to find out that "autoiconz" doesnt sell them anymore.

I just bought one of these. I, like it ! Doesn't come with directions, but install's easy enough. Sure cleaned up the engine compartment. I could see my dirty greasy valve cover !! Car wash fixed that. Seems to pull the hills better too.

Probably had too many negative feedbacks. This seller has 52 in the past 6 months, and 36 neutrals, that's a lot.

Has anyone had problems with this seller? I'm interested in this as well. My electric fan should be here this week and I have a 2/2 Belltech drop waiting in it's box...

The seller may not be the best, but still 94% positive, and for $7 more you get a better intake than the "chromeintakes" brand.

im not vary familiar with a 95, but the only reason why i think it wont work is because the AC condenser might get in the way of the heat shield.

here is a pic i found (best one i could find), if you compare this to the 3rd pic i posted, the heat shield will NOT fit, also there is no bolt to secure the intake, so it looks like it wont work with a 95, only 98+.

I didn't have a problem with them. It did take a while to ship (I live in ohio) but other than that it was fine.

You have to take into consideration, also, that customers can be irrational sometimes or just plain stupid. It may be the customers fault that they had a bad experience. You never know.

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

Ummmm... after reading your posts I was going to buy this item... when I clicked on the link it didn't work. A little ebay searching and nothing comes up for that seller? Guess he's setting up a new ebay ID? Anyone find this item through another seller? I couldn't

I hope so too, comparing it to the others for sale on ebay, it seems to be the best bang for the buck (looks/function/price) intake available.

If anyone finds it in the next few days/weeks/whatever bump this baby back to the top

Thanks for the tip.

I sent them an email and here was their response:

Hello,

I own a '99 2.2L 5spd S-10. Your S-10 cold air intake was used for an "install thread" on an S-10 forum, seen here:

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f105/e...review-352416/

I saw it on ebay a few days ago, but when I went to order one yesterday I searched ebay and your website and can not find this product. Is it still available or will it be available again soon?

Thanks,

Jesse

Re: ebay cold air intake install/review

I installed the intake that the OP installed from the same seller.

I was disappointed at first. It had no directions and the filter end of the black piping was CRUSHED in about 1/2". There was no damage to the box at all, so it was packaged that way. Oh well, I straightened it with a pair of pliers. I'm purty smart and I figured out how it all went pretty quickly.

Couple observations:

1: While it's great that it has a nice solid plate for "heat control" and mounting, this thing is still ENTIRELY too close to the A/C compressor for my liking. It does not move when you wiggle it, so I guess it will be fine. I "adjusted it" as far from the A/C compressor as I could.

2: The big metal heat control plate thing they give you bolts to the side of the radiator support using the two bolts that hold it together and where the old air box mounted to the inner fender. You replace that bolt with a rubber bushing bolt thingy. What I don't like is that my overflow hose can't reach around the box's bracket so it is currently pinched between the radiator and bracket. No biggie, I'll notch that tonight.

So, what does this thing do?

1: Makes engine noticeably louder under acceleration. Some people may like it, I personally don't, but it's not horribly loud, especially with the windows up.

2: My butt dyno says this does nothing, or very little, under acceleration...but where this modification shines is in 4th and 5th gear. There was a very noticeable difference on the highway when trying to pass/go up hills in 4th and 5th. Before my truck lugged a good bit, especially in 5th when going 50-60mph, but it seems to not do that anymore. That alone makes this mod worth it. *Disclaimer* I already did the efan mod, so that may have already kinda "maxed out" my acceleration butt dyno, so I didn't really notice anything.

3: Fuel mileage? I doubt it will do anything to improve it, especially since the efan made a noticable improvement already. I don't really care, as long as it doesn't go down. It was worth the 50 or 60 bucks to have some more power on the highway.
