Detailed E-Fan Install
Alright so i finally bought my E-Fan Today. I got a 14" TorqFlow fan from autozone. The part number is 733690. It draws 11.5 amps and puts out 1250CFM. I would have got a fan at a junk yard but Im up there all the time so they cut me good deals all the time. Then i got a Preset Electric Fan Control Module. Its preset at on at 185F and off at 170F.
I know this fan doesnt put out as many CFM's as the taurus fan. But the guy there looked in TorqFow's application book for a 2.2L w/ ac and this is the fan it recommends. I have read a lot about the install on here and theres tons of questions people always have. Mostly in the wiring. Theres tons of pics of the hardware install but none of the wiring. Im going to try and clear some of these questions up to the best of my ability. Tomorrow ill be beginning the wiring install and im going to wait on the fan install until i make a bracket at work to mount the fan to. I want to try and make this as detailed as possible to maybe reduce the number of efan threads popping up here. I am open to suggestions about it so dont be shy. So heres some pics of what i have to start with. Last edited by xtrememeasures10 : 05-18-2008 at 01:55 AM. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
I thought i put that in my first post but i guess not! Well im trying to figure out how many cfm's the 16" model puts out cause i might swap the 14 for the 16. Even though the manufacturer of the fan recommends the 14 i would rather my truck have more air to cool on hot summer days. Ok just got off the phone w/ autozone. the 16" model only puts out 1400cfm's. and the stock fan is about 16" as well. and the 16" fan is 5 bones cheaper so im gonna go get it. Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Alright I had to help my buddy get a washer and dryer to his place now im back home ready to do the electrical install. Pics step by step once im finished!
Right on. yeah the normal cost of the 16" fan is 64.99. Like i said i got a good discount and now i got it for 30 so. 30 plus the harness at 24.99. I needed some heat shrink and i bought a bunch for like 5 bucks. I already have soldering iron, solder, flux so im ready to go. but you can get a soldering iron at the parts store for like 10 bucks probably. Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
So i emailed the manufacturer today this message
"I purchased your 16" Fan from autozone for my 97 s10 pickup 2.2L motor 2X4 w/ a/c. And i have heard on a forum that someone else installed it and it didnt cool enough to keep the truck from overheating. I was wanting to make sure this was the correct fan for my vehicle thank you!" And this is the response. "There are several possible problems that can be encountered when of an OE Fan/thermal clutch assembly. First is the amount of air flow that is necessary to cool a particular engine. That determination should be computed first. The amount of air flow of the replacement fan is spec'd as a specific flow thru a typical radiator. A typical radiator is considered to be 1 in thick. Adding additional cooling efficiency by increasing radiator thickness may actually restrict air flow when using an electric fan. Our 16" fan operates at app. 1150 CFM (16-17amps)across a typical rad or or app. 1350 CFM The amount of current (amps) necessary to operate the fan @ a given amount of air flow is another consideration. Normally, a fan will require app. 16-18 amps to operate at max speed. These must be 'free' amps. This can be determined by operation of the vehicle with all electrical draws operational. Engine idle, all lights on, a/c on, wipers on, blower on high...etc. Load the system down completely. Measure the amount of amps being produced when these drains are evident. If less than 20 amps the fan will not operate at max efficiency. Consider the possible heating problems that may exist within the engine cooling system. An electric fan, or any other fan will not overcome a possible engine cooling system problem. Vehicles with A/C may require more than one fan to properly cool the radiator (engine) and condenser. Of course proper installation is always required for proper operation. It is possible that the best cooling will occur with the standard OE fan/clutch assembly. The use of an additional fan may provide additional engine cooling. First considerations would be determination of engine heating problems and a evaluation of OE Fan/Clutch assembly. Determine is sufficient alternator output is available for proper fan operation. This is key and should be a major determining factor for installation of electric fans. Thank your for your support of CWI/TorQueFlo and Autozone products." Is it just me or did i not receive an answer to my question. lol. I got blah blah blah amps, blah blah blah Cfms blah blah blah. They have to have had someone ask about this in the past or had a customer w/ a problem w/ it. Oh well well see. I figured out a way to mount the fan when i was at work today. still havent finished the electrical install. Im going to mount the fan to the OEM shroud inside the shroud in almost the exact spot the OEM fan is located. I just have to yank a couple things from work this week. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Alright well i think i got all the kinks worked out of the harness.
Here goes the electrical install. ![]() Wiring harness w/ wired tagged according to schematic. ![]() mounting location for temp sensor. ![]() ![]() Foam Padding added. ![]() Retainer clip for sensor. ![]() Sensor two pads and clip installed. ![]() Removing back of shroud to drill hole for wires to go through to the sensor. ![]() Hole drilled for wire to come though. ![]() Power wire going from battery to sensor then out of the sensor to the relay to engage the relay. ![]() Wire coming out from sensor through panel. temp mounting location for relay. Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
![]() disconnecting ac clutch engage wiring. ![]() Wire cut and stripped ready to be tinned and soldered. ![]() Shitty soldering job. I didnt have flux. I came back the next day and re soldered and heat shrinked it. Harness came w/ same color wire kinda a greenish blue color. ![]() Heat shrunk and ready to have a longer wire spliced into it to go to the relay. ![]() All protected back up. ![]() Pretty obvious ground wire off relay harness and ground location. ![]() extra length of wire spliced in. Make sure you splice in a extra foot or so that way if you have to change your head gasket or something you can cut zip ties and move it out of the way. I just used some extra wire i had, color of the wire doesnt matter as long as you dont get confused wiring it up. IMPORTANT!!! the blue green wire that comes w/ the harness has a diode soldered and heat shrinked into it. YOU MUST USE this wire if you dont your ac will always turn on. The wire also must be installed correctly so the polarity of the diode is not reversed. If its reversed the fan will not turn on when the ac is turned on. The end of the wire that comes bare wire must be the one thats spliced into the ac control wire. ![]() Again used snake skin to protect the wire, zip tied it to support it around. this is just a temp location im going to move it after everything is all working well. I just want easy access in case i need to work out a problem. ![]() Ground inplace for relay. ![]() Hook harness into relay. ![]() Red main power wire for input to relay then power will travel through relay into orange wire to the fan. Yellow wire power input for sensor in radiator core. NOT SHOWN YET. The orange wire off the relay harness has a fuse then goes to the fan. then run a black wire from the fan to a ground and your all done w/ wiring. I have pics of that install once the fan is installed. ![]() And a teaser. Im going to bolt L shaped brackets on the inside of the fan shroud. Then rivet nut plates to the backside of the L bracket and a bolt through the mount on the fan will hold the fan in place. I still need to get some more hardware from work. Hopefully ill have this done by the weekend since im going out of town. I would like to see and increase in gas mileage for the trip. |

I have a grounding jumper on the lower part of my core support to the frame from when i installed my fogs and hids so im getting a good ground on the core support too. but yeah for other ppl that would be a really good suggestion. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
alright long due for an update
I decided to get a taurus fan. Going to the junk yard tomorrow after work to pull one. Anyways i havent updated cause i went on vacation, tree branch fell on my truck when i was out of town, didnt damage it thank god. Anyways tomorrow ill be getting the efan and maybe putting it in depending on whether or not i have to modify the wiring setup for a dual fan. If i do ill have a new diagram and start from scratch with the wiring. I promise im gonna make a good how to here. Its just time and money right now are hard to come by. Anyways what year taurus efan fits best???? |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Xtreme,
This is the fan, comes on taurus, lincoln (mainly on Mark VII), and mercury sables, The engine your searching for are 3.8L. If you find yourself having to choose pick the earliest year. And Chris is right these things are way more powerful, I'm talking 4000-4500 cfm on full load. There is a 700+hp mustang out there that this thing cools. And this is the relay Chris was talking about for derale.. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=DER%2D16739&N=700 +115&autoview=sku I found this one on eBay, it comes with a 30 amp circuit breaker. Comes in handy if you don't mined spending on fuses all the time! I haven't done it yet, but I and the rest of the crowd are eagerly looking on, so get to it! Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
For a 2.2, the taurus fan is overkill IMO. Just about any fan from a FWD car will work if it fits. The taurus fans are pigs anyway. I got a fan from an Aurora to replace a POS permacool (I went through two of those). Even with it hooked straight up to ONE 30A relay it hasn't fried it yet and it cools my 4.3 with the AC on in traffic.
The Aurora is a FWD v8 car with no grille and two radiator fans. However, the fans come out separately and I took the fan with more blades on it--which I'm thinking may be the low speed fan. Anyway, I paid $13 for it and wish I'd gone that route from the beginning. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Well damn I got there and saw 2 different types of fans. a single one w/ a shroud and a dual setup. All the wiring harnesses and shit i always remembered 2 relays so i figured two fans. Called nick z he said he wasnt sure but thought it was 2 fans and another guy from the forum and they said they thought the same thing. So i have the dual fan setup. Am i gonna need to go get the single fan dual speed setup? I figure 2 fans will work just as well.

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Dual fan setup isnt going to fit. TOO big. It might work if i put one fan in front and one in back of the rad. but i think ill just go back monday and get the single dual speed fan. damn it i was ready to set it up.

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
S-10driver, you can use this or make a T-fitting like chris, his is probably the cheaper way to go.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku My thing with taurus fans are the junkers are going to charge me the same no matter what car it comes from, so why not get the most bang for your buck? Any fan that cooled a engine with a larger displacement then a 2.2, would probably just do fine. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
ya you need the single fan setup, the dual is way too big. also the taurus fan draws like 50amps, youll need a new heavy duty relay. i learned that the hard way on my first install.

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
the low sp of the taurus fan draws right at 30A at startup and runs around 11A constant speed from what i've read.
the high sp of the fan draw upwards to 90-100A at startup and runs over 30A constant i believe. |

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
The compressor really isn't the best place to have the fan wired. The high pressure switch on the backside of the compressor is ideal. When you have the fan wired to the clutch switch, then the fan turns on and off with the clutch. Once the system has a high pressure the clutch begins to cycle to maintain that pressure. Now, once your system is under pressure your fan is going to be constantly switched on and off and will potentially kill your relay pretty quickly with all of those high amperage off/on cycles. The high pressure switch on the back keeps the fan on as long as there is enough pressure in the system, which is ideally when you want the fan to be on.

Re: Detailed E-Fan Install
Alright I wanted the low speed fan to run for like a min once the truck shut off. But i am going to need a timer circuit for that. For now Im pulling the fuse lol. Where is a switched ignition source under the hood?
