curiousity; might kill the dime

i have a 95 with the 2.2l 4 cyl its my understanding that they need a lot of back pressure. now i bought the truck with a hollowed out cat and the truck runs rough and my buddy put his computer to it and it shows that the timing is flucuating at idle and it is rough. can this all be due to the cat convert or am i looking at getting a ECM. Any help is appreciated.

i seriously doubt its the cat, it shouldn't effect your timing fluctuating at idle... what kinda program did your buddy use to see this timing fluctuation at idle? just curious...

Re: curiousity; might kill the dime

a 95 would not register a gutted cat, it only has one o2 sensor, before the cat.... the timing could be because of anything, any bad sensor or injector, or plug or wire... the timing is changing as a result to the crappy running, trying to level itself out.... MOST LIKELY but there is always a possibility that the cps is shot, doubt it tho

Re: curiousity; might kill the dime

your truck doesnt need backpressure, that doesnt mean run it open but it doesnt need 4 turbo mufflers and the problem is def not the cat especially on a 95

X2, I dought the ECM is bad either. Probably a sensor, Keep in mind the timing is controlled by vacuum if it has a distributer, so check for a vacuum leak or sensor, a tune up might even fix your problem.

Re: curiousity; might kill the dime

You need back pressure for the EGR stuff to work right but EGR isn't called for at idle. (but it might be stuck OPEN, a crappy lopey idle is a pretty good indicator especially if it cruises okay.)

I agree with the tune up stuff and of course maybe a vacuum leak.

Re: curiousity; might kill the dime

back pressure on 2.2's seems to keep torque high but,
keeps hp will increase if you open up the exhaust.
