Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

Okay im debating weither or not to get a Cold Air intake. People tell me its not worth it for the little gain. Well I asked the people that ARE NOT s10 junkies.

So whats your take? Is it worth it? How much noise difference is there under the hood? What brand should I buy?

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

slight noise difference. most people will agree just buy the cheapest youcan get.
and you can get the same exact results (debatable i suppose) by just cutting the stock airbox.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

get the chromeintakes one on ebay, and upgrade to a K&N filter.

I have that one and it does indeed sound better, and has a bit more get go in higher RPM's. I have raced two other s10's, with just a stock intake and a cone filter, and one with a CAI - both 5 spd, and a stock 2.2 auto and beat all 3. The only thing I have done is a CAI, a Dynomax muffler, and new 2.25" exhaust piping without as many bends as the stock exhaust.

hmm i wonder if you run a big flexible hose from the ac to the intake?....comming from inside your truck

jk

btw, how do you keep from sucking up water with those ebay intakes? (when you hit a big puddle).

Most actual cold air intakes have what's called a bypass valve on them (not to be confused with a blow off valve on a turbo). It stops water from entering the intake.

and it defeats the purpose of having a "cold air intake" . it will allow air to get sucked trough it along with the air filter

It's an external diaphragm to keep water out, but keep air flowing in in case your filter gets submerged in water (big puddle or whatever). Normal intakes that have the filter in the engine bay don't really need these.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

AEM’s patented Air Bypass Valve virtually eliminates the chance of hydro-lock in the event the filter of your AEM Cold Air induction system becomes submerged in water. On most systems, the valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe and shuts down induction at the filter when it becomes submerged, rerouting air through its external diaphragm to keep water out and air flowing in. Check with your dealer or call AEM for more information on air bypass valve installation locations. The AEM Air Bypass Valve is C.A.R.B. exempt on AEM Cold Air induction systems only and is NOT for use on forced induction vehicles.

Here ya go!

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

Nah, don't work for AEM ( that would be pretty sweet) I just had a friend who had an intake, and he hit a big ass puddle, and his engine was hydrolocked. He invested in one of those little things, and it didn't happen again. My buddy still says he has a blow off valve, though, that's why I brought that up. I have no idea how it works, but I assure you, it does.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

I have an AEM (non-oil type filter). The cleaning without oiling is sweet, so yeah. It was super-easy to install, took me less than an hour (might take others more if you don't have experience taking the old AF assembly off)

With an upgraded exhaust, BIG difference. Along with the exhaust noise, you get a better sound from the engine compartment itself, and a better exhaust tone. Little more power too.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

I recomemd to stay away from ebay if you live in California. My smog inspection is coming up and I know it will fail by just loking at it. I regret not buying the Volant or K&N CARB excempt air intakes.

Its funny that I kept the old intake, yet manage to loose half the parts for the inspection that right around the corner.

I dunno I like mine, I got a kit on ebay also, but found that after I drove it around, the metal was freaking HOT!! So I encased it in fiberglass about 1/4" thick. I have mine a lil different then most I would bet. You guys want to post a pic of your intakes? I will take a pic of what mine looks like this weekend and post it.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

Ram air is the only way to go, IMHO. The problem with those aftermarket CAI are they suck in hot air from the engine bay. You would need a heat shield to keep the hot air away. The problem with ram air is the location of the tube. Ive seen setups go through the headlight and/or foglights and those work.

Heres examples:

And im sure you heard of ram air hoods. How do you think they work? Same concept.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

I got this short ram thing off ebay with a blue metal tube and a cone filter. the noise it makes is ridiculous. It totally changes the tone of the motor and you can hear it inside the cab. Probably no HP gains, but I don't really care cause it sounds cool as hell. Worth the $15 for the sound alone IMO

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

I've had different cai's on my truck the first one was APC which the welds fell apart on, they replaced it with a new design whose filter fell apart so i just splurged for the K&N. Very little difference at first however when combined with a slightly larger diameter exhaust (2.5") and a better flowing muffler (flowmaster), i actually noticed alot more throttle response and a way better sound. I could be wrong here but the K&N being plastic seems like a better design and more like a cold air intake because it doesnt heat up like the chrome ones.

Aluminum is a good conductor for heat. So plastic would be better. I agree.

They both eventually heat up, but it doesn't matter anyways because it has no affect on the air. There's been tons of test about this misconception.

Thats true too. Even if it did have an affect on air, it would be very minimal. I already knew this.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

just get a cheap one then and hope it doesnt fall apart. They do help, i mean look at all the bends and tubing in the stock intake, that with all the bends in the stock exhaust. Air flow is pretty restricted. Dont expect significant gains just a little more pep.

Has anyone seen any real significant MPG increases? I could give two craps about HP...thats what my Silvy's for...

I'm wondering if a cold air intake for my S10 would make an MPG increase...anyone have any real numbers?

you can get stuff called wrinkle paint...if you have ever seen a cold air intake, they plate the metal with a paint that wrinkles as it dries, its good insulator for heat. i was told the spray on stuff is decent, i plan on getting an aluminum one and spraying it with that stuff.

Re: Cold Air intake. Real gain or just more pleasing to my ears?

if your not sure about whether or not u wanna get a CAI, or what difference its gonna make, just grab some header wrap and some tin foil. put the header wrap on the intake tube and tin foil over top of it, shiny side out. Tin foil the air box too. zap straps will hold it all in place no prob. Take it out on the highway and run a tank through it, you'll notice a slight hp increase and maybe a couple mpg gain just from insulating the intake system.

Hell, i plan on buying one just so i can see my damn valve cover. There's so much plastic in the engine bay of a 2.2 truck it's a little disheartening to look at.
