Just got my 56mm quad 4 throttle body off ebay for $20. It came off of a 95 Buick skylark 2.3L.

Throttle Body Cleaning

First thing I started doing is cleaning the throttle body. Mine and many others I have seen are extremely dirty. Items I used for this was Carb Cleaner, Wire brush, and a small wire wheel that connects into a drill.

I also unscrewed the two bolts that hold in the Idle Air Control Valve pulled it out of the throttle body. Once you pull it out there is a small O-Ring which needs to be cleaned along with the Valve and the port due a lot of debris inside.
Tool Needed (Torx Bit Socket T-20).

On the back side of the throttle body is the stock gasket which needs to be scraped off. After I finished scraping off the gasket, I took some light sand paper and went over the area where the gasket was which takes off any left over gasket and makes the surface smooth.

Replacement Parts
Autozone part #‘s
IACVAC138
TPS TPS142 (Throttle Positioning Sensor-Left side of TB)

After that I taped off the TB and painted it with Rust-oleum Aluminum.

Installation-Parts-& Tools

1. Ratchet, extension & 10mm socket.
2. Vacu-Tite! Part #’s 47359 & 47431 (T-ing off Vacuum Line)
3. 10mm X 1” bolt
4. 3 small washers
5. Mini hack-saw

I starting this assuming that you already have your intake off. First remove the 4 Vacuum hoses and unclip the IACV and the TPS. Hoses 1 and 2 will reconnect in same positions on new TB. Hoses 3 and 4 will be connected using a vacuum elbow and T Adapter.

Next remove the 4 bolts that hold on the stock TB. Keep the bolts because you will reuse 2 of them. Also will need to unhook the throttle cable from the TB.

After that the Stock throttle body will come off. Here is the two throttle bodies side by side.

Next reinstall the new TB using two of the original bolts. The new TB will bolt to the intake manifold using the top left and bottom right holes. The third hole is where you will use your 10mm bolt to help hold the throttle cable bracket. My throttle cable bracket didnt mate up perfectly so i used one small washer in between the throttle cable bracket and the TB on on the top right side. I also used two washer in between the throttle cable bracket and the TB for the top left side.

Next reattach hoses 1 & 2 to original positions. Then get the vacuum elbow and plastic T adapter to connect hoses 3 & 4. Also reconnect IACV and TPS.

Last I'm showing how i hooked up my Throttle cable. This TB was off a 95 buick so this part might be custom depending on what car you get the TB off of. Basically the S10 throttle cable was not long enough to hook into the stock position but there was a square hole in the plastic that the ball from the throttle cable would fit in. I took a mini hack saw and cut a small section of the plastic so that the cable could slide through. Also once this is done make sure the butterfly opens/closes all the way with out interference.

Then reinstall intake and start it up.

My truck started up and within 15-20 sec, it was at the usually 950-1000 idle rpm.

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

I got mine off a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire
1995 - 2.3L Quad 4 DOHC (LD2) 150HP Mode .... it was only a 56mm and my buddy took it to his shop, cleaned it out, and bored it out to a 58mm. I got it from my local junk yard for 30 bux and a e fan off of a firebird 25 bux. After that I drove 225 highway miles w/ no a/c and it used less than 7gal of gas!!!

sorry to jack

I've got what may be a stupid question about boring, please forgive me, but does the butterfly need to be replaced if you do bore it out or will it still close...

I think you would need a new butterfly because when its closed it there is a less then paper thin gap in between the butterfly and the inside of the tb. With out replacing the butterfly i dont think the truck will idle correctly because too much air is passing through when its closed.

Hey if your throttle cable hooks up differently then mine or anything else goes differently with your install then post up some pics so we can see.

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

Look in junkyards with all the vehicle listed above but you need one from certain motor to fit as listed above.

I notice power in all range, my mpg didn't improve but definitely better power adder, not bad at all for the cost.

As far as I know, no one dyno 56mmTb from stock.

Look through eBay, craigslist, backpage, classified or have someone buy it for you and ship it.

As what? said you notice it through the rpm range. My trucks exhaust seems louder and my truck seems to make it up the hills around here better then before the mod. If your doing intake/exhaust then you should definitely do this along with it.

yeah going from 18's to 20's will change the overall gear ratio if the tire diameter is bigger...

seems like the cable will hook up the same way as you've got yours. Whats the part number for a replacement gasket that I will need?

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

You dont need a replacement gasket because the S10 intake manafold has a press rubber gasket. Just use the one that's connected to the intake manifold and you will be fine.

TB gasket isn't needed, you also don't need gasket maker for it either.

Correct, trans gear, ring/pinion and tire fize affect rpm/mph.

Smaller tire = higher rpm, mileage roll faster

Taller tire = lower rpm, mileage roll slower.

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

Awesome write-up! I literally just got finished doing this and it's amazing! For the money and time spent, no comparison! I only have one problem, maybe someone can help me with. I have Cruise Control and it mounted up just fine, however, the cable is too short and holds throttle at about 1/4 when bolted up. The plastic bracket that mount to TB looks like it might be adjustable, but I'm kinda heavy handed and have already broken a small piece of the cable pulley. If anyone knows a solution, short of just not having CC hooked up (as it is now) let me know... thanks again for a great how-to!

Look at other 56mmTB thread about it, scubadog explained about CC cable part.

I'll have to copy and paste it here.

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

I just installed mine and was wondering if I was supposed to keep the top sensor that was in the new tb in it because I put mine in instead. I also noticed it sometimes sits at a higher idle when I first stop

Re: 98+ 56mm Quad 4 Throttle Body Install

I guessing your talking about the Idle Air Control Valve (First Pic?). I used the one that came with the 56mm tb . Mine will usually sit at 1100 or so but then once you come to a complete stop it will usually drop down to 950+ within like 3 seconds or so.
