will not crank when hot

Ok so I bought an 89 2.5 e code for 1000 I couldn't pass it up the body was straight and it was lowered with air ride. Well what my problem is is that when the motor gets hot and you switch it off it doesn't want too start again till the motor cools down. I tht it was the coil but that didn't work so I'm thinking maybe it's the icm. does anybody have any idea as to what it could any help would be appreciated

Does it not turn over, or does the engine turn?

Re: will not crank when hot

ICM are pretty common for not wanting to start when getting hot when bad. not saying thats it but could be. But your not clear if the motor turns over.

Re: will not crank when hot

Your starter is probably dying. This used to happen to me all the time in my old truck. the starter would get hot while the truck was running and would not function until it had cooled back down. I replaced the starter and never had an issue with hot starting again.

Re: will not crank when hot

Test the yellow wire on the ign switch for 12v when cranking.... Check for 12v @ starter when cranking (smaller terminal, is purple on newer vehicles), check starter relay - ? do 1st gens have starter relay?

Also how about the clutch switch?

Bang on the starter when wont turn over?

Re: will not crank when hot

Should I do all that when the truck will not crank? If I drive it right down the road and switch it off it will crank back up but if I drive it for a while is when it does that

I was going to second the starter when it doesnt turn over; I also had that problem when it was going bad.

Now, if it turns over but wont start, you need to see if you are getting fuel and/or spark. You can pour a little gas in the throttle body and see if it fires; if it does; you have spark but no fuel. If it doesnt, you have no spark. I use a spark tester to do this, but you may not have one handy and if it fires you def have spark but no fuel.

I might go with the ICM next if I had to take a stab at it. Ive also had that go bad on me. But test for spark/gas before you go buying stuff.

Re: will not crank when hot

If you have fuel injecting, Hall effect is good, suspect (ICM, P/U Coil, Ign Coil, coil/plug wires) If it is a hot thing, get the ICM tested at your parts store, have them run the test several times to heat it up good since it fails when hot.

Check for spark at coil and at distributor.

Re: will not crank when hot

Is it a 5 speed? You could try to push start it.

Re: will not crank when hot

So check for 12v on pink wire on coil (ign on).

White wire, hook a testlight to, ground light to battery + terminal, crank, if light flashes coil is bad (assuming pink has 12v.)

If no flash, check ICM at parts store, also ohm out pickup coil.

Re: will not crank when hot

ICM is in the distributor, screwed to the base where the cap bolts to, uses (usually 2 very small hex hed screws like 5mm or something?) Should be a set of wires going into the distributor, these usually are plugging into the ICM. A pair of wires on the far side will go to the P/U coil, ohm that pair out to make shure the coil is good.

Re: will not crank when hot

11 is MIL circuit (did you flash the code on the dash or have a plug in reader?)

13 is O2 signal fault - signal low or sensor open.

Re: will not crank when hot

I've never gotten the 11, nor do I know what it would be since you used the light on the dash, perhaps a bad ECM?

Code 13, is another one I have not gotten, but suspect it is either a bad sensor, or a broken connection to said sensor, inspect the harness and wires associated with the sensor, if you wanted to you could put a DMM on it and measure the voltage output of the sensor..... Perhaps it is just unplugged?

Re: will not crank when hot

I'm sure it's a wire the lights on my dash don't work and none of my front blinkers work. I can't keep it running when i'm stopped or I press in the clutch
