So I took it to the dealer today...
these events are interesting since my last post was asking about a future build, now it's a necessary one. I took the truck in to the dealer today because the tranny was slipping quite a bit, and a fluid change didn't help any. Also because there was oil in the air filter housing coming in through the breather filter. The tranny needs a new valve body, thats getting thrown in. He suggested just leaving the oil in the air filter housing alone, because it's probably time for a rebuild (which he made very clear was not worth the trouble for this engine). Seeing as how something needs to be done about the engine, I've been toying with a few ideas, the first one was this:
1) http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/En...230&engCat=rpo However, I'm fairly sure I wouldn't be able to use my transmission, computer or radiator so I'm not gonna go with that unless someone knows a magical way to mate it with my tranny. 2) Finding a shop to rebuild it the way I want it rebuilt, a bit higher compression, and new internals. 3)New engine from autozone, advance, or Napa. 4) Do not suggest V8, gas mileage is something I'm trying to preserve here. Any suggestions? |

Quite honestly, if you have some oil in your air filter housing, big frigen deal, replace your PCV valve and drive on. By no means do you have to replace or rebuild your engine. If you went to a GM dealer you either misunderstood them, or they are trying to yank your chain. A valve body is completely legit for your tranny, but a motor, come on.

X2^^^^
But if you want a 3.4l get one out of a RWD Camaro. What trans is in the truck now? What MPG do you get now? Swap that auto for a T5. Last edited by lesterl : 10-27-2008 at 11:51 PM. |

Re: So I took it to the dealer today...
the 2.8/3.1/3.4's have the same bellhousing pattern as the 2.5
but anyway just replace the crankcase filter and pcv valve and the oil should stop. |

So the guy, might really be full of it? he did say he didn't look at the source of the oil, just assumed that it was an engine on it's way out...
Also the 3.4 would bolt on to a 4l60? |

Re: So I took it to the dealer today...
you have a 4l60? That explains the valve body issues. I thought the 2.5 had the small block bolt pattern? Not the 60* pattern, I dunno. Sounds like Dime may have done that before.

Also, how much could I learn from compression check readings about the necessity of a bottom end rebuild? I've got the results, I'll post them tomorrow. Cuz if they can shed a significant light on what is necessary I'd like to hear what you guys think. |

I would think maybe Oil pressure hot at idle should tell you more about bottom end fitness. Whats wrong with the head? Compression will tell you about compression i.e. rings/ valves/ cylinder linings.
How many miles are on the thing? Does anybody know about the little old white mail trucks? They have a Duke in them! |

Re: So I took it to the dealer today...
You dont need a motor, the guy who told you that is full of shit. Replace your PCV valve, clean out your air box and replace your air filter, drive it for a week or two and you should notice there now is no oil in your airbox. Oh, and go back to the dealer you went to, and smack the asshole you told you that.

Re: So I took it to the dealer today...
a 4l60 and 700r4 are the same transmission, there are two different types though. theres the 60 degree bellhousing trans and the 90 degree bellhousing trans. the only difference is the case, the bellhousing is different of course. the inside parts are the same components.
