Ram Air for the Iron Duke
I searched but didn't find anything specific as to exactly how to install a ram air intake for the duke or even if its worth the trouble to begin with. Inside the O.E. Air Intake outside the the air filter is the EGR filter. So I'm pretty sure that the air filter traps some the recirculated gas emissions. If you install a ram air, will this require the duke to use two filters without having to eliminate the EGR setup? Will removing the O.E. air filter for an air intake filter be a bad idea because of the EGR?

Re: Ram Air for the Iron Duke
The filter inside the air filter your refering to is just the breather for the crankcase. depending on how worn your duke is you may or may not have oil buildup on it. And yes you will need to do something for it, you cannot seal it off or anything like that. You can get a breather to push into the valve cover from Advance or Autozone, etc. As far as going to a filter that sits right on the throttle body as opposed to the intake setup is the fact that youre bringing in warm engine air instead of cooler outside air. It isnt stopping me from mounting a filter like that though. Just need me some machine shop time for the adapter, you will find that most filters that sit atop carbs will have too large of an opening (5.5" or so versus the TBI which is like 4.5") and that carbs have a single screw for the air filter opposed to the duke TBI that has two. Hope that helps.

Re: Ram Air for the Iron Duke
I always thought that was a filter for the EGR air. Thanks for not making fun of my lack of automotive knowledge. I'm still learning though. The crankcase breather was pretty oily but I cleaned it up after installing a new fuel injector. Sounds like a ram air setup could cost a tad bit much than what Im willing to spend. I guess just a K&N filter is the most logical way to go.

Re: Ram Air for the Iron Duke
hey jason, if you were to buy a crankcase breather then could you just use the same air intake cover for a ram air setup without having to have one custom made?

The ugly OE air cleaner assembly has the ability to flow more air than the TBI itself. The Pontiac engineers already provided the engine with a nifty cold air intake system, it just needs some Owner attention towards sealing up the OE factory holes and cracks around the sheet metal... I used Oxygen Sensor Safe (black) RTV sealant and black duct tape (light weight and it works) to seal the passageways up. By doing this, you assure that no hot air from the engine bay "sneaks" into the intake stream-flow. There is a resonator/restriction in the neck area of the air cleaner that I removed, which makes it sound a bit louder, but increases flow somewhat. IMHO, I would not use a K&N filter element on my lawnmower, let alone on my truck, but then, that is just MO. I use an OE filter (dry paper pleated) and change it twice per year, for about 5 bucks... ![]() |

Re: Ram Air for the Iron Duke
Thanks for the tips! I've always just bought FRAM air filters from Wal-Mart. I'm always a little skeptical about O'Reiley aftermarket parts even though I like O'Reileys.

I hear ya about the build quality of O'R aftermarket parts. Out here, we have Schuck's Auto Parts (owned by O'R) so we get the same stuff. I once bought a new v-belt from them and it stretched out about a foot. Upon, or just after the big WTF?, I noticed that the belt was MADE IN YUGOSLAVIA!!! But, if you are wrenching on your rig, and it is 8 PM, and you need something, they are open. I try very hard to get all of my parts from NAPA.. their filters are made by WIX in North Carolina. But, Fram air filters from Walmart are just fine for our use. Last edited by Steady Eddie : 10-15-2009 at 08:47 PM. |

Re: Ram Air for the Iron Duke
I used a spectre high flow air filter and it only cost me 5 dollars after the 10 dollar mail in rebait. And the only filters i ever use wether it be oil, fuel or anything,is wix but wix is the best filters on the market in my opinion.
