i know another turbo topic

just thought i would throw this out there, i'm getting ready to turbo my 2.5. its completely rebuilt with 6,000 miles on it, i used a performance head gasket that is made to hold 80% more pressure than a standard one. it also has a msd 6a ignition box, msd blaster coil, and summit racing 8mm spiral wound wires.

the plan is to fab up a bonnet and blow through the tbi. for now i'll be using a fmu to boost the fuel.

i have a garret t3 that is set to 7psi from the wastegate. next week i'm dropping off an exhaust manifold gasket to a metal fab shop who is making a beefy one piece flange for the custom header we are going to build, next i'll be getting some weld ells and a t3 flange made.

i hang out at a local shop and the owner is helping me do it, he eventually wants to get a spare intake manifold drill it for multiport, get forged pistons and rods and run it on megasquirt. but we'll see about that later

this is his personal s10 http://www.cardomain.com/ride/278836/1

Re: i know another turbo topic

Do you think you could post detailed pictures of the turbo manifold? I'm thinking of doing this while I get the body straight and build up my 350, but I'm not sure how the exhaust mani should be build for the turbo.

i'm thinking about doing this also, but i plan on doing a top mount turbo manifold due to the steering shaft.

Re: i know another turbo topic

Everybody on here usually says the 2.5 is a low revving engine with a weak crank, that may be true, but I've been wanting to see a turbo 2.5. So go for it! I'm gonna subscribe to this thread.

Re: i know another turbo topic

well you know, just because it doesn't rev doesn't mean that it can't benefit from a turbo.

everyone has to remember that 2.5L can make alot of exhaust gas to spin the turbine.

the problem is that they don't make alot of exhaust, thats why you gain almost nothing with the clifford header. i'll prolly boost my 2.5 after i bag my v8 truck just to see how much it'll take before it breaks

Re: i know another turbo topic

well i was looking into it, a T3 turbo, off a Dodge shadow/omni/etc, a Saab Turbo, or anything else that came with them. They are the best bet for the 2.5L of fury the iron duke is.

and i just found out i have an A code engine

As scary as that crank is, the rods are worse.
I'd expect those to go first if you push it too hard.

Shredder's setup should be good for 140hp. I remember a really similar setup being offered for another car with a 2.5, came with a warranty on the engine, so it had to be fairly reliable.

they crank that comes stock is such a stupid design and just looks weak as shit. but you could benifit from a real small turbo that would rev quicker at lower rpm's. the bigger the turbo, the more exhaust you need to spin it and the higher r's you need to get more exhaust. so if the iron duke has low pressure even at high r's, small turbo moves easier with less air than big.

and if its not boosted too much, the stock stuff could handle a tid bit of boost. its the rpm's that the motor cant handle.

Re: i know another turbo topic

well my flanges still aren't done. i'm having them done in 1/2 inch. i'm picking up the weld ells tomorrow morning. i ordered the t3 flange tuesday, it should be here around wednesday. right now we are designing a throttle body bonnet. we are thinking of two designs: one is a 4.5 inch pipe capped off with a 2 inch pipe welded to the side, the other is a 4.5 inch 90 degree elbow thats drilled out for the throttle body studs

Re: i know another turbo topic

I'm not sure but isn't the voulme of exhauxt related to the size of the motor? So wouldn't a 2.5l motor put out more exhaust than 2.0L?

I circle track race these motors and I never broken a crank if anybody has I would like to see a picture of it. But I have broken a few rods over the years. Also the 350 chevy rods won't work as the crank pin on the 2.5 is 2 inch compared to the 350's 2.1 inch. But I have used the early 327 small journal rods with modification.

Re: i know another turbo topic

what did you do during the rebuild to make the bottom end survive? a good ignition system won't help you when you've got less then 4 rods attached to your crank an theres A BIG hole that you can view your crank with.

Re: i know another turbo topic

where can you get pistons to hold up? why not just put these pistons in with better rods and shoot some nos down there and see what that crank will take?, hell cant you take the 2.5 out and put one back in one day?, i am gonna call the local junkersz and see if i cant get a spare cheap, if i can i will shoot it and we will know what breaks, even with the squeeling noises and funny vibrations it makes, but seriously though, isnt a v-8 with turbo a bit much in this size vrechile, a guy local has one with just a built v-8 and told me it push out in turns, what more could you want, what about the tranny will it hold up this kind of punishment, or will it rip through the gears like a fart from a fat woman?

Re: i know another turbo topic

any RWD will 'push out' on turns. hell if I get on it my sub 200 bhp cressida gets loose around corners and it's balanced F/R and handles like a luxury sedan.

I wanna see the manifold when it's done!

Re: i know another turbo topic

understeering is because of improperly setup suspension

Re: i know another turbo topic

sorry, I assumed 'push out' referred to oversteer. if you're getting understeer with a turbo v8...wow. my car oversteers when you want it to.

Almost everything understeers from the factory (yes, almost everything is set up for lazy comfort). in general people are too dumb and/or lazy to understand how to control oversteer. they'd rather just lock everything up and watch the pole come right at them.

My car is on the better side of stock handling. stock suspension with better rims/tires. it's a boat but it'll perform if you know how to treat it.

understeer-car doesn't want to turn.

oversteer-car turns too much and rearend comes out of control.

Re: i know another turbo topic

i popped a head gasket in may while testing it against another car. right now i'm finishing my new engine build. i should have it assembled this weekend and back in soon. i built the bottom end including a new crank. i've also thrown the fmu away in favor of a aeromotive boost referenced fuel pressure regulator. i also ditched the plumbing coupler on the charge pipe, i replaced it with a reinforced one like it supposed to have. it ran great on 9lbs. the head gasket was going bad before i turbo'd it (it was leaking oil between head and block) so i knew it wouldn't last real long.

i'm going to install my intercooler and up the boost to like 12-14lbs
