Who has swapped one into a 98+

I threw a rod in my 2000 2.2 and am about to start to swap in a carbed 400 with a th400. I have been looking around and no one has gone into detail on how they rewired everything. I have an hei dis that I am putting in it and just the important gauges now and will be doing the rest when more money comes along. What is the best way to do it? What can I keep and what do I have to pull? Wire wise that is.

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

Is it your daily driver? For an illinois vehicle that needs to have emissions testing, you will need an engine of same year or newer I believe. Or at least be able to meet emission standards of your vehicle. Which would rule out the carbed engine. If I remembered correctly. I tossed my cpu and all wiring that was associated with it when I went carb on my 88. What exactly are you having issues with understanding? Is engine already pulled?

I am in normal il we don't have testing here. Most of what I have read I will have to rewire the truck. Will the lights and non engine stuff work when I pull the ecu? And yes it will b my dd

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

If I were you, I would find a wiring diagram and take your time cutting into it. We did it after I got engine in the bay and plugged in what we needed first, then started the clean up of wiring. You will not have issues with lights unless you some how cut the wrong wires. Worse come to worse you can reconnect them. lol. I would probably pull the plug from cpu and pull it out back into engine compartment and look into the routing from there. Someone else with more experience with it may be able to give you more or better info on how to. Just what I did.

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

Ok thanks man. The motor will prob go in and out a few times. That's the route I was going to go just wasn't sure if it was the right on or not. What about heater controls? Those with the bcm too?

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

i have a 95 that had the 2.2 it should be the same as far as wiring goes

i just cut everything in the engine bay basically except the wires for my headlights. there is no need for an ecu. if you have power doors and windows im sure you will have to keep your bcm cuz thats what controls your factory interior functions. although im not sure where that is located as i didnt have the power options.

so the only wires you will have to keep in your engine bay is the wires for your headlights and one wire that has power when you turn the key to the on position and when you try to crank the motor. oh and you will need to keep the wires going to your starter relay also. (thats where i messed up now i have to rewire the relay) all that will come from the harness on your driver side im pretty sure the starter relay wires will too but im not 100% on that.

hope this helps you out a lil

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

Yea it does thanks man. I am waiting on the insurance guy to look at it and when that's all done I am going to be pulling the 2.2 out and getting it ready for the 400. How much of the firewall did you have to beat in? I have the jtr book but that's mostly 1st gen stuff

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

none at all for the motor or trans only a lil bit to clear the passenger side header, but that is with my mounts as far forward as possible. if you want your motor to sit further back you will have to do something with your firewall.

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

i haven't torn into my wiring on my 99 yet but the other thing to look at is if you are wanting to keep A/C or go back to it at some point those wires are in that loom as well as neutral safty start switch, gauges you'll have to see, I'm goin after market and running new wires for them, i think the sensors ran through the ecm so you might have to find the ecm to gauge wires and connect them... firewall same as above mines clear forward and some beating on the pass side
hope this helps

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

So insurance came throught today guy came and looked at it then a few hours later I get a call saying they are going to cover it. So I spent the next 4 hours pulling off the front end. All I have to do is drop the drive shaft unhook the fuel lines and the starter and the 2.2 is ready to come out.

Now I just have to wait on the check to start ordering my parts. Then it's time for the fun to begin. Should be done making my motor mounts by then.

I am pitting a 400 4bolt with a th400 trans and a quadrajet(for now will put an edlbroc on it if I have enuf cash left over.

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

i did a swap in my 97...and the wiring is the most pain in the but thing if ur keeping ac and heat...if not just cut it all out...and no banging on the firewall at all...but i did have to notch frame for fuel pump...i really didnt have to but i didnt want to have to pull motor to change fuel pump if somthing went wrong with it...i just made a little more clearance...what trans u planning on running?

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

if wiring is not your thing there is a solution... you can get a painless wiring harness that will plug into your gm steering column an give you a new fuse box with provisions for everything from ac to power options as well as stereo wiring...
since you are adding aftermarket instruments then there is really no need to keep anything... the painless or any other brand wiring harness will give you everything you need from start to finish to rewire your entire truck...

it is a little costly depending on which system you use but saves tons of headaches and gives you the ability to add things as money comes...

say you want ac in the future... the wires will be there if you opt for them when you buy the system...

everything is labeled and the instructions are semi good as to what is needed...

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

I would do that but kind of on a budget. Not worried about ac I took it off my 2.2 before it stopped working cause I never used it and wanted more power. I have a buddy that is really good with wiring.

Re: Who has swapped one into a 98+

I am about to pit the
motor in but I was thinking can I use the stock cluster and use the 2.2 sensors even if I pull the ecu? Or am I better off just putting aftermarket in? Would like to just run the stock one if possible.

Theres literally no way to make the stock cluster work with its own electronics. You're basically going to have to get all new gauges and wire those to your existing components. The TH400 has no provision for an electronic speedo, and even if it did it wouldn't be one compatible to be read with your stock cluster. So time to start looking for some Autometer gauges.

Ok that's what I thought but thought I would dbl check. Thanks. I bought the hedman headers 2.8 frame mounts from jegs. I made the engine mounts but you can buy them if you can't make em. Check summit racing eBay or jegs

You can make the cluster work fine. Stock gas gauge is going to work, stock oil and water gauge will be fine if you wire the switches to the harness then install on new motor(I would recommend manual gauges anyways to watch them better instead of the dummy light), stock voltmeter is fine if you wire it to the alt. The speedo is where it gets tricky. I've read where many off V8s10.org have taken the 40 tooth reluctor ring out of a 700r4 and mated it to the th350/400 and used a speed sensor off the 700r4 and wired it to the stock harness for it. I haven't got around to trying it personally, but its next on the to do list.

I have a 95 and left the PCM in and just clipped the wires I know I didn't need....ac stuff and various sensors...and I just tucked the rest so I didn't clip something useful. The ones you need are pink for hot when the key is on(goes to the coil), purple for the starter(hot in crank mode) and I think brown is the exciter wire for the alternator. Then just run a thick gauge wire from the b+ on the battery to the starter.

Will I have to leave the computer in for everything to work that way?
