Rear axle questions

Hi all,

Hoping for expert help here. I am putting about 450 to 500 hp into my s10 extended cab for drag racing. I know I will buy a Street Fighter T-350 transmission or similar for it, but I need to know what the rear axle will handle. The guy I bought it from had 456 gears and a mini spool installed in the stock rear-end and was running low 13s with a warmed over 350. The rear end looks small to me,though ( I think about 7 1/2"), and if this will not handle the torque, then I am wondering if there is a bolt-in that will work from another vehicle or if I would need to have one custom narrowed (not cheap, nothing is here in OKC) . Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Rear axle questions

with an automatic, and good driving, the 7.5 will handle a lot..... otherwise, you can get an 8.5 from a 2nd gen (they aren't too common, but they're out there)... thats 100% bolt on, tho in some cases, the driveshaft needs to be shortened. you can also get a for 8.8, with few mods to fit, but its wider than an s10 rear

Re: Rear axle questions

So you think the 7.5 will handle running 11.70 1/4 mile times with 10"X 28" slicks?

Why did you go with the 9" if the 7.5 was handling it? Just for safety reasons? Should I invest in a set of Strange or Moser axles for the 7.5 , or should I just wait until I can get something bigger?

Why wouldn't an 8.8 out of a Mustang work? Has anyone tried it?

Because the Mustang rear is not set up for leaf springs and the Exploder rear is almost a bolt in.

I made well over 200 runs in the mid 11's on the stocker(stock axels with a Zexel unit from a Camaro)

But you let the motor have one hiccup on the starting line with nitrous and BAMMMM!!!!....it's time for an upgrade

The runs before the carnage were 10.50's with 1.4?'s(maybe 1.5?'s....don't remember) 60' times.

Either way.....if it's a NA application with an auto, the 7.5 will live almost forever.

Re: Rear axle questions

I've been told the issue with our stock rearend isn't the axles, it's the pinion that can't handle the shock.. I am not sure on this so any one can chime in on that with experience.. hopefully it will help both of our concerns!

See post 9.

If you have a stick and some sticky tires....the 7.5 will die a gruesome death.
The ring gear and pinion will impersonate a hand grenade.

If you have an auto(no trans brakes....treat as manual) and you preload the suspension at the line....it will live a very long time.

It'll even live on the spray......until it stumbles off of the line....unloads the suspension...and then comes back to life before you can even think to lift, thus ripping the front tires away from the clutches of gravity.

BTW, this stunt resulted in the death of my 7.5 and 700R4 instantaneously.

Re: Rear axle questions

BTW, preloading the suspension will greatly reduce the amount of shock to the ring gear and pinion, and rear tires...thus(in my experience)making it easier to hook.

Re: Rear axle questions

will a ladder bar setup hurt or help with the shock?

Re: Rear axle questions

Mine is set up with slide-a-lock traction bars. I do not intend at this point to use nitrous for bracket racing (just another thing to worry about). Hopefully this rear end will hold up long enough to enjoy it before back-halfing, probably after next season.
