Don't let a small thing like a thrown rod put you out of the v8 game..
You know even a v6 can throw a rod, right? Then what? A 2.2? lol

Re: just saying good bye to the v8 guys its been fun.

power steering leak = 30 bucks worth of hose and its fixed
oil leak, uhhh replace the gaskets/seals while you are fixing it

if it is something you have to drive then the 6 is ok, but you gotta revert everything back to the way it was before, i say rebuild it and drive something else

Re: just saying good bye to the v8 guys its been fun.

yeah i have been thinking of rebuilding it, maybe better internals....cam.... i have a 97 jetta that i will be driving as soon as i get the clutch fixed...and i can get out of the thunderbird im driving now...i need to get a new oil pan i was told one from a 3rd gn f body would work....and the powersteering leak was leaking from the pump, fitting...and the oil pan was leaking from the oil level sensor....i guess if im going to go that far might as well replace the timeing set....

fuck the 4.3 sounds like a perfect reason to pull the v8 out and beef it up for more power. dont let some minor bugs that need to be worked out turn you away from the v8.

Re: just saying good bye to the v8 guys its been fun.

Sounds like a good plan

Side note... I thought I was unique ... didn't know there was ANOTHER 2.73 geared LT1 2nd gen

You could always fix the power steering like i did.... the box has a loop of hose connecting the input to output, and i got rid of the stock accessory bracket You can barely see the loop, but here's the bracket.

Re: just saying good bye to the v8 guys its been fun.

No power steering
Mine was leaking so badly it was going out 1/2 the time anyways... so now it's just "out" all the time.
BUT... it'll NEVER leak again

Re: just saying good bye to the v8 guys its been fun.

yea dont ditch it, ive had some many stupid problems with my engine, its unbelieveabe, ive wanted to sell the whole heap many times. But then i remember why i built it, so i just fix it and keep on going. And a rebuilt kit differs alot in price. I know alot of people have personal preference on manufactuers. They go from a few hundred for a simple ring/seals setup to a few grand for new crank, rods, pistons the works. It depends on what you broke and what you want to spend

would the starter make the truck sound like it threw a rod?

without sounding like a dick, it sounds like your guessing, if you threw a rod youll know it, does it knock? and it should knock a lot worse when it first starts, a good start would be to drop the oil and look for any sign of metal, even better cut open the filter and do the same. I'd hate to see you go BACK to a 4.3 if its something that can be fixed quite simply

flywheel shouldn't be loose, i never touch the trans when swapping, put motor and trans in as one.
