Re: Cutting off

get a timing light

clamp 1 end on ground, and 1 end on the #1 spark plug wire (drivers side front) and check the timing off of the crank shaft balancer. there's a little timing tab, it may be nasty and you may have to clean it off.

get it timed to 0 by turning the distributor one way or the other.

that's a good base to start from, then you can adjust the timing + or - depending on how it runs as you give the motor some gas

Re: Cutting off

Sounds like the converter is not enough for the cam... I dont know what duration on that cam is but You are probably going to have to get it idling high in park to idle down right in gear.....

But i would start with the timing to.... I would set it advanced at about 37ish, for a stockish 350. So try and set the timing advanced with the vacium hose pulled off the distributer, and blocked from the intake.

Re: Cutting off

you want about 37 total timing, and idle timing you would want anywhere form 0-8 degrees, some eng can take even 10 degrees, depending on cam and octane of gas used.

It also sounds like it may be idled 2 low, idle it up a bit with the idle screw on the throttle.

Re: Cutting off

with something like that, i woudl recommend a 2500-3k stall convertor. What is your stall.

Re: Cutting off

that is really pushing it.

have you tired to idle it up to see what it does, i woudl start with 100 rpm increments.

Re: Cutting off

That paticular cam is pretty tame , the duration you quoted is actually advertised duration. The duration at .050 lift is closer to 228 duration. I agree with the rest of these guys get your timing set and readjust your idle, your convertor shouldn't play into this at all.

Make sure you put a vaccum gauge on it and check for a leak. It could actually be something as simple as that. What does your vaccum read @ idle?

Re: Cutting off

sounds like a turbo 400...
but the convertor is not your problem! i've got the same cam in a 350 in my 82 van. it idles at 750-770 in park. and 680-700 in gear. it sounds rough but it isnt at all. still have plenty for the steering and brakes. you have some other issue goin on.
and this is with a stock 700-r4 convertor with lockup...

Does it stall only when cold, and it's OK when warmed up? Electric choke? Set the idle mixture screws with a vacuum gage for the highest reading when the motor is warmed up, then back each one out 1/4 turn for slightly rich. It may be that they are set too lean and the motor is stalling from lack of fuel. The primaries should be full closed at idle. If the idle comes up while you adjust the idle mixture screws, turn it back down.

Re: Cutting off

No, the cam is not too big. Why not set up the idle a little faster? Also, there should be no rough idle with this cam. Check the carb settings and the ignition timing.

Re: Cutting off

Try to set your timing with a vacum gauge. Its kind of old school but it works. Advance your timing till you get the highest manifold vacum (not ported) when you get that turn the distributer 1/4 inch farther advanced and it should be good.I have a 98 vortec with 95 4.3 serpentine and cant get a light on my balancer ,this has always worked well for me ... Good luck
