coolant problem...

So here is my problem. My 350 is having coolant problems, overheating or boiling over is the main issue. Last week I somehow lost half of my coolant from my radiator. I know I'm not burning it and I checked for leaks along the block. Today I got it up on ramps to "burb" the system because I knew I had air in it. I let it reach operating temp and popped the radiator cap, got all the air out. Closed the hood and went to go get gas. Now the problem starts....

As I was driving I could hear this popping noise coming from under the hood. So I pulled into the gas station and looked under the hood. Coolant was pissing and popping from the overflow tank. Got it back home and the overflow tank is full of coolant. Now I'm asking myself "what did I do wrong?"

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: coolant problem...

could be a number of things, ill start with the simplest, most obvious ones

- do you have a shroud around the fan?
- is the fan too far from or too close to the radiator?
- is it a big enough radiator?
- what size thermostat are you running?
- what type of fan are you running? (flex blade fans are garbage)

those are best case scenarios and more than likely one of those is the problem... but if none of them are, than it might be something more serious like a blockage in the waterjackets... which means youd have to tear the engine all back down again... ive seen this happen before on a friends vehicle, someone pounded the old freeze plugs into the block when it was rebuilt and never bothered to get them out... we found most of them still in the block

Re: coolant problem...

Is this after a change in parts or have you been driving around on the same set up and all of a sudden this happened?

Re: coolant problem...

Sorry guys I've been out of internet for the last couple days but. I'll try and answer these questions as best I can.

It has an electronic fan mounted to the radiator I think its a puller fan.
Radiator is out of a corvette, dont much other then that.
Thermostat...don't know if its good or bad haven't checked.
No shroud, just a e-fan with shroud.

It's confusing, but I'm gonna try and figure out what is going on tomorrow in my shop class. I didn't do the swap, I bought it this way.

Thanks for the help,

Later

Re: coolant problem...

I'd try with the simplest of problems and take the thermostat out and see if it still happens. You could be cheap and just take it out or you could replace it completely since they're not too expensive. A stuck closed thermostat could be the problem. What kind of valve covers does it have, and how many intake bolts do you see? Or if you know what heads and intake just say that.

Re: coolant problem...

Try a leakdown test too, it can't hurt. It's possible a H/G went between a cylinder and the water jacket, and it's pumping compression into the cooling system.
