Re: carb leaking

if its the float, a rebuild kit should take care of that and they're not expensive. A piece of dirt used to get stuck in my needle valve a long time ago and would cause my carb to leak, i had to keep taking the valve out and blow the dirt out and it would be fine.

Re: carb leaking

the carb was rebuilt a couple months ago and it ran on my buddys race car for about 15 mins. then it was gave to me and the first time i picked it up i flipped it over upside down and i think that did something to the float.

and now that i have my motor ready the carb is leaking

i dont really know that much about the carbs but i am learning so i dont know how to rebuild it maybe ill just get the kit and go for it

That is most likely the problem.. Pull the needle and seat, blow it out with some air and put it back in.. I had that problem till i put an inline filter between my regulator and carb.

If you can put up a picture of the carb I may be able to help.. I think a 600 is different from the carb I had which was a 850 double pumper..

Re: carb leaking

Is the 600 the one with the balance tube on the driver side of the carb? Single inlet? I just took mine off because it kept leaking and pissing gas everywhere. Took it apart 3 or 4 times and kept pinching the o-rings on the balance tube. So I said screw it and bought a 670 Holley street avenger dual inlet carb

I think it is that one.. How's that street avenger work? Im thinking of getting one and ditching my edelbrock 600.

Re: carb leaking

Well I've only had three carbs in my short life and I'm not very savvy with them, but the Avenger is definately the most user friendly. It has "see through" float bowl lenses to adjust them but the instructions say to take them out after your done because they turn yellow but it's still a nice feature. Also the car fires right up now compared to my old Holley. I got it on sale at a local speed shop for $350 and it was worth every penny. It's more of a beginner carb or one that you just want to set it and keep it there.

Re: carb leaking

i was kinda messin with the carb tonight and i took the screw on top of the rear bowl off and i was trying to put it back on and i dropped the lil nut under the truck somewhere and so i figured until i could see to look for it i would just tighten the screw down without the nut

so i did that and tryed spinning the motor over to see if it still leaked and and it didnt so i dont know what i did or how its gonna run but the carb isnt leaking anymore.

so tomorrow im buying a new rotor button cuz its not firing and every other part of the ignition is new so i guess thats why its not

so ill get to see how it runs hopefully

Re: carb leaking

Be careful if the carb still leaks it will get inside the lifters and cause them to collapse. And then you'll hear a ticking noise coming from the rockers and when you take the valve cover off they will be loose.

Re: carb leaking

You need that nut on the rear bowl. The nut is what adjusts the float level up and down. The flat head screw is the set screw that holds it in place. I imagine the float was set too high, which is why it was leaking. It is also common for the o'rings to get pinched while re-assembling. Then the tiny rubber piece eventually breaks loose and sticks the needle valve open. In reference to the Street Avenger series carbs, best carb I have ever run. Hands down better than the plain Holleys. I have been running a 570 version on my built 305 for about 6 years now. They were new back then. I also ran a 670 on a built 350 in my wife's old '68 C10. It ran awesome! I have had to tune both of them for the application but they were pretty close out of the box. When properly tuned even the plain jane 600 Holley Classic will put you back in the seat!

Re: carb leaking

do you think it could have been set to high if it was all the way tight so if i loosened it it would stop the leaking?

Re: carb leaking

No, turning the adjuster in clockwise, lowers the fuel level. So, if it were all the way in there would be hardly any fuel in the bowl. It is more likely that a piece of trash was lodged in the needle valve. By moving the assembly around a bit you inadvertantly knocked it loose, thereby fixing the flooding problem. For a daily driver the fuel levels should just be up level with the sight plugs. You can adjust the front about 1/4 turn at a time. Then let the vehicle sit and idle a bit to adjust the fuel level in the bowl. The rear is a little harder because the secondaries must actually open to use up fuel from that bowl. That will require a bit of a test drive down the road and back. PLEASE DON'T try to adjust float levels with an open plug, and fuel dripping onto a hot intake!! Go buy some clear sight plugs from your local auto parts store. A friend of mine burnt up his engine compartment doing that. I had to totally re-wire it for him.

Check your ignition module and condenser underneath the rotor. More than likely it's one of those two causing your problem. Also did you make sure you are getting power to the coil when the ignition is on??

Re: carb leaking

Those parts are pretty cheap, or you could get a rebuilt HEI distributor from advance auto parts for 99 bucks. I almost did that before i figured out my module was bad..
