best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

I am building a vortec 350 to swap into my truck, all I need now is the cam and then the motor can be put together. I know that the vortec heads can only take a .480 lift or so.

I have two questions:

what is the best cam to use with stock heads?
&
what is the best cam to use with heads good to a .550 lift?

This is a street truck and will be a daily for the next few months a least.

thanks
Kyle

I'd contact comp cams or some kind of reputable engine company and have them grind you a cam or recommend one for you.

I was thinking that, I just wanted to see if anyone had any personal experince with certain cam they liked or didnt like.

My opinion you can go bigger than a performer series edelbrock. In my truck power falls flat about 4700rpm (just my experience). But the best thing to really do is post #2 advice

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

This was a reply I received to the exact same question:

For the cam, I'd pick a Comp Cams grind somewhere in the 258 to 274 range, depending on how smooth an idle you want. Also, remember your motor has a hydraulic roller from the factory, and all you really need is the cam and valvesprings, you can reuse your stock lifters. The 270HR: XR270HR-10, Camshaft Part#12-422-8 Dyno Sheet would get you a hard running motor, but I'd probably be more likely to go with the slightly milder 264HR here: XR264HR-10, Camshaft Part#12-412-8 Dyno Sheet.

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

would either of these cams work? I was wnating to not have to get my heads machined because I heard that when you cut the guides down you need to use roller rockers or your rockers or something will wear out fast. is this trure? if not im going with the 270hr

also when I look these cams up on summit it says they are not computer controled. does that matter since I will have a custom tune?

thanks

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

Stock vortec heads have a maximum lift of around 480 or the press-in rocker arm studs pop out, as long as you upgrade to some screw in rocker studs you'll be good to go with stock Vortec heads.

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

so I can get screw in studs and then do I have to get any machining done to run a higher lift cam?

sorry but I dont get it. I thought you had to cut the guides down to allow for more clearance?

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

I am going to be running and Brian at TBIchips.com recommends the LT1 Z28 cams. They can be had really cheap (got mine for $35) and will work with zero modifications.

then what is the difference form the vortec motor to an lt1? I thought parts were not interchangeable because the vortec motor is a genI and the lt1 is a genII.

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

The lift limit of approx. .480" really has nothing to do with the rocker arms, it has to do with the retainer coming in contact with the valve seal/valve guide. If you really do not want to do any machining on the heads I would call up comp, tell them you like the specs on the 270 but you are interested in no more than .470 lift (to be safe, if you measured the heads you have you could get an exact #).

LT1's have reversed cooling system and a few other differences like cam driven water pump, and the optispark distributor mounted on the front of the engine negine the crank pulley and water pump.

The valve springs from a LT1 are great upgrades for the Vortec engine. The cam is also a great upgrade for the Vortec engine is your vortec had a factory roller cam. Just cause they're different motors, dosen't mean things won't exchange out. Look at the 4.3 and Small Block. Pistons, Rods, Bearing, etc.. will all swap out. The 4.3 is a Small Block with 2 cylinder chopped off.

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

I used this cam in my 97 Blazer when the 5.7 Vortec was installed:

Comp Cam .501 Int .499 Exh lift.
210 Intake 224 Exhaust Duration w/112 lobe separation.
918 springs
w/ Crane Gold 1.6 roller rocker arms
Crane pushrods
LT headers

The heads were modified and prepped with screw-in studs and ported by Jared of CPR fame.
Fastchip tune by Ed Wright
It idled at 850 RPM and made 285 at the rear tires

Yeah I beleive that was a response from one of my questions at one time.

Re: best cam for a prty stock vortec 350??

I'm new here! I used a comp Cam with 305 D and 525 lift. if you have goods heads and exhust. This is a great cam. If you have a auto you will need a 3500 stall.
