97 s-10, SBC 400 build

So I have been piecing this together since January but I have been hesitant to post about it because of the pessimism that surrounds this forum.

Anyway, there are a bunch of good guys/gals on here and I wanted to share...and maybe brag a little bit.

So far this is what I have on hand:

·SBC 400
509 Casting
Bored out .020
·ATI Super Damper Harmonic Balancer
·Clevite 77 Main and Rod Bearings
·Eagle 4340 Forged Steel Crank
3.75 in stroke
·ARP Main and Head studs
·Double Roller timing chain and gears
·Comp Cams Endure-X Mechanical Roller lifters
·Isky Racing Cams custom grind cam
Solid Roller 4-7 swap
Intake Duration @ .050: 254
Exhaust Duration @ .050: 260
Intake Lift at valve: .656
Exhaust Lift at Valve: .656
Lobe Separation: 108
·Ross Forged Aluminum pistons
+3cc dome
·Speedway 4340 H-beam rods
·AFR 210cc Aluminum Heads
Intake Valve Diameter: 2.08
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 1.6
75cc combustion chambers
Competition machine finish
·Victor Jr. single plane intake manifold
·Pro Systems custom built Carb
REAL 850 cfm
4150 double pumper
·CSR Electric Water Pump
·Melling Oil Pump
·Comp Cams Ultra Gold Aluminum Rocker Arms
1.6 ratio
Full roller
I know I jumped around a lot in that list but you get the picture. Compression should be right at 10.5/1 and hopes are around 600 flywheel HP.

Also, I already have a fully built 10 bolt rearend that is built to hold 1000 HP. And I am eyeballing the 765R4 from bowtieoverdrives.com.

Just thought I would share and would enjoy your comments.

And dont worry pictures are soon to come.

NICE!
I have a 406 in my S10 too, so I will be watching this very close. I am very interested in feed back from your heads. I am not sure if i want to go with 195's or the 210's.
PM me as your build progresses

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

well i had a mishap this past weekend...

while measuring for pushrod length it was discovered that i ordered the wrong piston pin length

so i have ordered more Ross pistons that will give me the desired compression of 10.38/1

i will definately keep everyone informed about my build

thanks for the comments so far!

I was torn between the 210 and 227...the only reason I went to the 210 is to avoid the extra 1500 bucks on offset and shaft mounted rockers

I just need some pics of the truck it's going in. That way if I pass through your area I'll know who NOT to line up next to at the light!

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

That looks like a nice build, I got a pro systems carb from patrick last spring, worked great out of the box. For the 227's, harland sharp sells a offset intake rocker for them. way cheaper than a shaft system. run a stud girdle on those with a roller cam to stop the deflection.

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

That coil is DEFINITELY mallory, should work well. as far as I can tell it doesn't offer a whole lot of adjustability versus any of 6 series of boxes or it's equivalents, but should work just fine.

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

Another dumb question, What type and size carb are you planning to use?
I am using a 800cfm Holley D.P. Some people say it's too big, but the truck is a drag truck only so I am not concered about fuel milage lol.

The carb that I have ordered is a TRUE 850 cfm. If you buy a carb off the shelf and it says 800 cfm you may actually be getting only 700 or so.

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

just a pic of the truck it is all going in

excuse the grime...it has been sitting for a few months

dont really like the color of it but i cant complain considering it was free to me (handed down from step dad in high school)

I am thinking about painting it but that will be down the road

the 4 banger and all is still in the truck so I have a ways to go but it will be a HUGE step to get the 400 running!!!!!!!

thanks for the compliments

I plan on using engine plate so headers will most likely be built custom

What I want is big tube primaries with 3" collectors, ceramic coated, and they have to fit angle plug heads, anyone know where I should look? Anyone know if anyone makes some like this that would possibly fit with engine plate and not conversion mounts?

NICE! I love the intake. Are you planning on throwing it on a engine dyno before install? Or a roller dyno once it's done? I am looking hard at the Afr 210's and that intake.
PLEASE KEEP POSTING!! lol If nothing else it gives me motovation...lol

I do plan on putting it on an engine dyno. I got a place close that I can pay 400 bucks to have it all day, as many runs as I can make. This will let me get everything adjusted the way I want it.

I tell you what....the AFRs were hard to swallow when i first clicked the button but once they go there it was worth every penny. I think it will pay off even more when I get it cranked up this weekend!

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

Well Artos.....I needed the luck and I just didnt have enough of it

nickel and dime after nickel and dime! After about 10 runs to the parts store I ran out of time this weekend but I am a LOT closer to firing it up than I was last week.

After buying a 3/8 plug here and an adapter there, I finally got to pushing the start button only to find out that I didnt have the right starter. The local parts store didnt have the mini starter that would line up with a 168 tooth flexplate so I have to wait for one to get here. Anyway I will up load pics of the engine on the test stand in a little bit.

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

As you can see...

the water pump in these pictures is a temporary one, I could find the fitting that is needed for the new CSR pump that I have

the valve covers are temp also, have not ordered the ones I want yet so these are there just to fire it up

these pictures dont show it but fuel lines, plugs and wires, ignition wiring, and a newer radiator is on the test stand

the headers are only temporary just for the start up, custom headers will be built

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

Sounds cool . Seems a little different too. With open headers it might be hard to tell, but can you notice the difference in sound with the 4 - 7 cam?

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

It's really hard to tell with open headers(just because of the volume), but you can usually hear a difference with a true dual exhaust, as soon as you put an X-pipe on the exhaust though, it sounds too close to tell reliably. Obviously I'm not speaking for emann as I've not heard his engine, but I've heard three other 4-7's that I can recall, one for circle track that had a y-pipe and 3" exhaust with no muffler that sounded almost identical to a standard SBC, but on the dyno with open headers it was just too loud to tell what was different, though it did sound different, one with true duals and flowmaster 40's that definitely sounded different, and one supercharged with true dual 3" and a magnaflow x-pipe resonator that just sounded like a really pissed off SBC.

yeah the open headers were obnoxiously loud...and the idle is not set so we had to hold a little throttle for it to stay alive

the truck will be getting torn down within the next few weeks!!!!

my goal is to run in the 10s

role cage is still under debate but most likely will happen

i am just afraid of making a few easy runs at the track and then when everything is set right...one hard run and then being asked to not run again when I break the rules....haha but that would be awesome!

Re: 97 s-10, SBC 400 build

asking not to return to the track because of breaking the rules is a great thing to happen if you just think about it...

with my ss i was happy at forst but then i got to to thinking about how much more it was going to cost i was sick... lol...

i even asked if i would not use the juice if i could keep running...

NOPE... lol...

hell of a bullet you got there...
