Lightbulb 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

So, I've got a 99 4x4 s10 with the 4.3 and 5 speed. I was really wanting to drop a 5.3 (maybe w/ a LS6 cam) out of a silverado but I have heard it is extremely hard. Is this true??? What is there other than the custom oil pan? Most of the sensors and computer will work won't they?? What about the tranny. Will it bolt up directly?? Or can it even take the torque, it is the 5 spd?? It will ONLY be a daily driver, NO dragstrip or anything. I would be great to get some info from all the s10 V8 gods out there. Any help would be great!!!

there are many different ways to do the swap. Go look at the other 5.3l swap threads that are open they have good info, or check the sticky.

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

yes, I just completed that swap.....my situation is a little different than most 4WD S10s though...I dont have IFS or the stock frame up front anymore....other than that it is pretty much the same. I used the auto tranny that was bolted to the 4.3 and it is holding up so far. I hope it lasts. I have heard that the 5 speeds in the S-10 is not worth trying to make work with a V8. either get an auto or a 6 speed if you are gonna by another trans. The LS6 Cam/springs are a nice upgrade and definately worth it if you can get them cheap like I did.

any other ?'s just holla

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

so you are saying the 5 spd isn't worth leaving it in. Why so? Is it week or just not suited to the motor? I don't really have the extra $ for another tranny. Any suggestions?

I dont know much about the S10 5 speed....all my info about them is second hand. I know it is built to withstand so much torque, but a stock 5.3 will prolly be over that...haha...I would do some serious research about it. you can always find a truck motor/trans that SHOULD bolt to your stock t-case.....if you wanted an auto

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

What kind of manual tranny would bolt up to my transfer case and to the 5.3 ? I wouldn't have a clue. Silverados are hard to come by with a straight. Maybe a Duramax tranny. I don't know I'm just shootin in the dark. D#mn D#mn D#mnity D#mn!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

more than likely you would have to find one that was bolted up to a 5.7, that has a 241 bolted to it....if you could get the t-case as well, that would be a good upgrade. I would get a 6 speed manual, but I dunno if you could make it bolt up to a t-case.

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

There are no bolt in options for a 5.3 conversion, 5 speed/4WD S10/ZR2.

Anything will require modification to the drivetrain, geometry, mounts, crossmembers, etc.

The stock S10 5 speed won't hold up behind a 5.3 with an 18 year old who says, "I am strictly a stick shift driver. I can not stand the Auto trannies"

If you have to have a stick and a manual transmission/5.3+ motor, you should go to a full size truck.

You can do in in a 2WD with less effort.

ive got the 5.3/4l60E in my 2000 zr2....but i made it 2wd....hehe

the lsx swap mounts that are made by many places will fit on the stock 4.3 frame mount if you flip the motor mount only thing is i have to go metal to metal mount...cause mine are welded to the frame

I already have a 2002 Silverado 1500 HD 4x4 with a 6.0 in it. It has the Auto and I just don't like it. I just like my S10...ALOT. If I wanted a bigger truck, then I probably wouldn't be on the best "S10" Forum there is. And thanks for the stereotype of an 18 year old and crazy driver!

And as for a 2wd, I do live where there are mountains and it snows. 4wd is a must for me. In my town, there are a total of about 2000 people and a grand total of 11 2wd trucks here. It's just not an option. Like I said though, this is only a daily driver.

I love the ZR2's but that sucks that it is only 2wd. Oh well, I bet it'll get up and go!

How come all these auto trannies bolt up so easy and the manuals don't. I hardly see any stick shift trucks out there. I think they are becoming a thing of the past.

Re: 4x4 5.3 conversion!! How hard????

It's because the Factory doesn't have a 4x4 transmission strong enough that will bolt in an S10 chassis with the LS-based engine without a lot of work.

You could try to adapt it to the 5 speed that comes with the 4.3, but it would not last.

6-speed 2WD's have been completed many times.
