400sbc in a 2000 noma
I dropped of my block crank and what nots at the machine shop on mon and got em back yesterday when I dropped off the heads. They had punched it out 30 over new pistons cam and the other stuff u replace when you rebuild a motor.
I started getting ready for assembly last night and found out I got lucky and don't have to file rings. Got two of the pistons fitted with rings and will finsh the rest today. If all goes well I should have the rotating assembly in today. I forgot my camera yesterday so I will get picks today. Here are the specs 73 400scb 2bolt bored 30 over dished pistons new cam specs are duration @.050 int 204 exh 215 lift int .420 exh .433 lobe sep int 107 exh 117. Compression should be around 8.5/1 I got a holley street dominator intake with a holley 750 carb for $150 having the cab rebuilt Cause it sat fir 5 years but that's ony going to be around $80. It will have headman headers an hei dist. I have been told that I should be around 320hp when it's done |

How you gonna pass emissions in IL with a carb? I think they made it nearly impossible to pass without any exhaust monitoring.

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
Yea. I don't know what I would do if I had to do testing that would suck cause I would have just put the tutu back in in the truck after it blew up and that's no fun

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
You could still run a larger cam and keep your stock converter and get decent gas mileage and better performance.

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
What kind of heads are you gonna be running?
You building it to run on 87 or 93 octane? I'd guess 87, judging by the compression ratio... Last edited by 03blazer : 11-09-2009 at 12:16 AM. |

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
I think they are stock 400 heads. They are 993 castings. I will try 87 89 and 93 and see what it likes best and gets the best. Mileage with and go with that

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
Heh, my 383 is gonna be running around a 10.7:1 CR... I'm gonna have to run premium... lol.
What are you getting done to the heads? Anything at all, or were you just dropping them off to be put on the engine? |

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
Ahh, so you're pretty much doing a stock rebuild with a little bit more cam and a better intake and carb. Should still move an S10 around quite nicely.

Yea. The motor guy said it was a shame to waste the block on a street motor cause there is little to no core shift in the block

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
Well, I would agree with him since it's such a low performance build. Virgin 400 blocks are getting really hard to come by. You're already boring this one .030" over for pretty much a stock rebuild. If you ever decide to build it later on down the road, you might end up having to get it bored again.
I'm not bashing your build at all. A V8 in an S10 is gonna move regardless, but you could've easily hit the 400hp mark without spending much more. All it would've taken was about a 9.5:1 compression ratio and a larger cam. Could've still run it on pump gas. I shudder to think about what kind of MPG my 383 is gonna get. A carb'd V8 isn't gonna do great either way you look at it. You'll be looking at prolly around 12-14 mpg if it's tuned properly. |

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
There's no better cure for MPG woes than a well built overdrive transmission. A friend has a 434, running high 10's in a 72 Camaro getting 22 on the highway.

Re: 400sbc in a 2000 noma
It's cool. Yea I would have gone with the set of flat tops he had at his shop and would have even saved me a few bucks but they said for what I'm doing that the ones I got were good and that I would save money in gas over time since I'm running a th400. It will get more go fast parts down the road but for now this will be enuf. I will be looking into a 4l60 or 4l80 down the road but I paid 400 for motor trans a quadra jet hei dist rear end out of a 95 4wd blazer that has 373 gears. And he is helping me build the motor since I have never built one before. It's only costing me about 1k to have the motor and head machined and the new parts. Oh and that's including the kit that came with the cam new timing set and all the gaskets I need to put it back together, and having the holley card rebuilt too
