4.3 -> 305tpi swap

Pontiac 84 tpi WITH CUT HARNESS... going into 92 sonoma, on 03 zq8 frame, pushing a nv3500 tranny, and 4.11 rear gears. i got my mounts, but the only problem is going to be the harness... any ideas?

Re: 4.3 -> 305tpi swap

85 was the first year for TPI.
86-later 4.3 & SBC flywheels/flexplates wont interchange
with 85-older engines because of the external balance weight
and the smaller crankshaft bolt circle, necessitated by the
one piece crank seal on the 86-laters.

wiring, you've got a real mess on your hands there...
might be easier to aquire a 90-92 "speed density" TPI
wiring harness and computer from an F-body.

http://fuelinjectionconnection.com/

I did this, $360 with a ecm or $310 if you send the computer back. Mine was the same year engine you have but I converted it to speed density to get rid of the ugly maf sensor.

I tried using the stock harness and it wasn't worth my time to try to figure it out.

it says it will support a 700r4, is that all, or will a 5 speed work too?

dude said it was an 84, but it's tuned port so, i'll have to get a flywheel for the tuned port and hope the starter works and clutch bolts up??!?!?

Re: 4.3 -> 305tpi swap

ok. went to Columbia and picked up motor. dude(Kevin) said he had a 305 TBI in the way and for me to get mt tpi for 150... i had to take the tbi too!
So... 100 mile trip back with two 305s i had plenty of time to figure out how to tell the mother-in-law she needs a v8 in her truck .
fuel injection connection has got the harness, thx afraidof7. that's gonna be a major time saver, if i don't wire it up myself... I'll take some pics with my shitty camera tomorrow, since it's dark now...

PS i got both my JTR books today. the wifey had them in the room when i got back. sooo that makes 250 even that I've spent so far gas and all.

Re: 4.3 -> 305tpi swap

dude you are funny! a 305 make more torque then a 350. HA HA. no replacemnet for displacement.
but they are good little engines.
o and have fun with that TPI BS. i got smart and scrapped mine. lol
but if you build any kind of power with your 406 you will sufficate it with a TPI!!! like after 4k it turns into a turd. that is a TPI in stock form...

Re: 4.3 -> 305tpi swap

a 305 does make more torque than a 350. i'll have to read up on exactly why, but i'll get back to you in a pm. 350 has more hp than 305, but its not really enough to feel the difference. the only reason i am even starting this project now is my 4.3 is about shot, and i found this 30k mile motor for $150. (i changed a water pump for my boss and he hooked me up with a friend of his that had 2 305s. one had tpi and one had tbi. he told me in order to take the tpi home for 150, i had to take the other too!!)

yeah, but I'm adding a tuner program and will probably end up mounting a laptop in the truck to tune everything in real time. i have found a book that lets me bypass all emissions, and wire up the engine to delete or set all sensors to read what i want them to. so when i change the long block, I'll adjust the computer accordingly. I'm not new to building motors. i had my 4.3 pushing around 260 horses. on tbi. as long as i get this bitch wired up where it will run, i can build plenty of power that i can swap out into a bigger ci engine

Re: 4.3 -> 305tpi swap

The 305 is often dismissed as swap material and indeed you will get more hp from a 350 with the same mods.If you have a 305 laying around and aren't interested in max hp then a 305 can suffice.It isnt hard to get 300 hp from a 305 if you use the good heads,ported 305 bbl heads,305 vortec heads or aftermarket 305 heads,also the small chamber oem vette alum heads can be used.I wouldn't go with a 305 if I wanted over 300hp though I saw one dyno'd at 487 hp !!!
