350 no turning over?

The 350 that I just put into my blazer will not turn over at all. My girlfriend's dad and his friend just came over and checked it and said it could be the compression because the crank wouldnt even turn with a wrench. So we took the plugs out to relieve some compression but the motor still would not turn over. So they told me that the engine may have a spun bearing or something internal (I have no idea how this could have happened because the motor has never been turned) or the trans could be messed up since it was dropped from about 3 feet in the air onto the tail cone. Just asking here to see if you guys have had this prob and have anything else I can check. Thanks

Re: 350 no turning over?

If it cant be turned by a socket then is more than likely internal.

Re: 350 no turning over?

Was it running OK last time it ran? Don't know?... then it could be internal.

Where/how was it stored? Inside, outside, covered?

Not likely the transmission drop affected this.

If it was running OK last time, the rings are probably rusted in the cylinders. With the plugs out you should be able to turn it with a wrench on the crank pulley.

I'd spray a good amount of penetrating spray into the cylinders. Something like PB Blaster or Moovit. Let it sit for a day and try to turn it with a wrench. Just begin by working it back & forth, trying not to loosen the crank pulley bolt. When it does come loose just spin it around a few times to work the oil around. When you start it up it will smoke like crazy for a few minutes.

Re: 350 no turning over?

This motor has never been cranked, I was going to put it into a different blazer but I ended up not being able to get a title so I put it in this one. The motor was stored in my dads garage. I might just try to spray pb blaster in like you said just to see what happens, since its the easiest to start with. Thanks for the idea

Re: 350 no turning over?

Take the TQ converter bolts out and see if you can rotate the converter by hand, if so then its in the motor.
If you can't, try spining the motor.

did you check the bearing clearances when it was assembled?? did you make shure you got all the same bearings?? as a 10 under or all 20 under etc??

i had a the same prob when i was buildin mine, i somehow got a couple 20 over bearings(the crank is only 10 under) so after i had a few done up, i went to turn it and it wouldnt, so i lossened them all off and it turned, so i took it all apart, and there were 2 or 3 20 over bearings in it, they were boxed wrong.. ..

haha

Yeah im sure they were all 10s and when I had all the pistons in when we built it, it turned easily with a rachet. Im thinking its got to be rusted cylinder walls or the trans.... has to be

Re: 350 no turning over?

Did you put a new cam in it? If so and you when to high your valves could be hitting the pistons.

Re: 350 no turning over?

knock the conv. bolts loose....you might not have it seated all the way.

Wait a min....are the conv. bolts bolted up? Motor won't spin over at all right?

If they are bolted up, what has been done since they were put in?

Re: 350 no turning over?

Yeah 700 for daily street strip and 350 for strip.I have a 350 in mine and it sucks for cruising decently long distances but it can be fun around town.

Re: 350 no turning over?

I think you have a rod cap or two on backwards, have the caps on the wrong rods, or you have the wrong rod bearings. Been there done that on all three when I was younger. That'll do it every time. Another possibility is that you used Lubriplate or another lithium grease for assembly and then let the engine set for several weeks or months before installing it. Only saw this once, but it really happened to a friend of mine.

He already solved the problem...... he had dropped the transmission on the tailshaft and messed something up internally, motor spins when not connected to the bad trans.

Yeah, guess I missed that. But hey, those other reasons are still common for new builders, right? I'll try to read each and every post more thoroughly from now on.
