Howdy y'all. I have a question about my 283 that I'm rebuilding it for my '93 S10. It has one of the factory forged cranks and did not have a harmonic balancer on it. All it has is some sort of pressed on adapter that the the crank pulley bolts to. I'll be using the factory serpentine accessory drive, so what needs to be done in order to make that happen? I'm sure that the end of the crank will have to be drilled and tapped, but what about the snout? Will it need to be turned or will a standard size SBC balancer fit? Thanks for any help.
Also, please resist the urge to say "just get a 350." I couldn't beat the deal and I'm not building a ten second street truck. I've built 350s before and they are one of the best engines (HP/dollar) around, but I'm wanting to do something different this time around. Thanks. Hicks. |

Re: 283 issues
Thanks FxsX24. I'll be sure to check into that. I noticed that you have a '94 S10 with a 283 as well. I also noticed that it said TBI, which is exactly what I'm doing. Can you tell me how well the combination works and what exactly goes into the tuning aspect? I'd assume a custom chip, but is there anything else? I'm open to any new information.

Re: 283 issues
well is your 93 a auto or a 5 speed, and what motor came in the truck?
i decided to use the 1967 style valve covers and the internal PCV, so i used a edelbrock 2703 intake (with the oil fill tube and TBI adapter) i do not know what chip i have in it, i may be able to check though, i grabbed a bunch from the junkyard till i found one that ran like i wanted it to |

Re: 283 issues
Man, that's the same setup (stylewise) that I'm using. I've the original valve covers and an old Holley intake. Oh, and it's the 4.3 with a 4L60E. My plans are to swap in an 8.8 Ford rear end with 3.73s. I've got a desktop dyno program that is figuring around 350 HP. That's even using a mild cam and head flow figures. No fancy, uber trick race stuff; just a little mild porting and with 1.94"/1.60" I don't even care if comes close to that estimate, though. Anything around 300 will be a MAJOR improvement. If I want more, I'll just boost it. Anyway, what cam and heads are you running? How well does the truck run in general? Thanks for taking an interest.

Re: 283 issues
running the stock 67 heads, 60-67 283/327 1.72int 1.50 exh 60.530cc chambers 9.5:1)
the cam is "stock" for that motor, Hyd., Duration at .050 Lobe Lift, 214 Exh., 204 Int., 112 Degrees Lobe Separation, 0.443" Exh. Valve Lift, 0.42" Int. Valve Lift the truck runs great, plenty of power, yet to run the track yet though |

Re: 283 issues
Ah, the mild cam explains why it runs good without a custom tune. That sounds like a nice combo. I bet it'll run forever. My cam specs on 224/234 @ .050" and .465"/.488" with a 112 lobe separation. My peak power should be in the 6,000 RPM range. I'm probably getting in way over my head on this one, but whatever. If it becomes too much of a problem or too expensive, I'll slap a carb and find a 700-R4. I'm hoping, though, that the 112 lobe separation will give me a steady vacuum signal for the TBI. Does your's lope any or is it pretty smooth?

Re: 283 issues
it runs pretty smooth, maybe a little lope in gear while stopped, but nothing major just remember that your PROM chips must come from a 7427 pcm (thats what should be in your truck) |

Re: 283 issues
You know I didn't even think about a limiter. The valves on the 4.3 start to float before it gets there. lol Thanks for that info on the PROM chip. I've read that somewhere before, but I couldn't find it anymore. If you've got pictures of your install, I'd like to see them. Thanks again for all of the advice.
