2001 nv3500 with pre 86 motor? help
I am done racing my truck I have just moved to far from the track now and want to make it able to drive. I have a th350 with 373 and a 26 1/2 tall tire so it sucks to drive at 45(3000rpm) Now my question is I am going to get a nv3500 and i know I need a pre86 2pc rear main 11" flywheel. I have searched ebay but I just dont know which one to get. Is there anybody that knows the correct flywheel that will work with the nv3500 clutch. Your help will be much appreciated. THank you

what kind of power are you making with that small block, you may want to look into either a 700r4 or 200-4r if you want to stay automatic, with only $3-400 worth of internal upgrades both trannies can hold up to 550-600 horse...
its worth noting that if you do go with either of these, they have different gearsets in them, the 700 has a really low first gear and a rather large gap between 1st and 2nd, and the 200 has the highest overdrive gear of all the OD automatics Transmission Ratios Tranny ----- 1st Gear -- 2nd Gear -- 3rd Gear -- 4th Gear OD Turbo 350: ---- 2.52 ----- 1.52 ------- 1 --------- N/A Turbo 400: ---- 2.48 ----- 1.48 ------- 1 --------- N/A 200- 4R: ------ 2.74 ----- 1.57 ------- 1 --------- 0.67 700R4 / 4L60: - 3.06 ----- 1.63 ------- 1 --------- 0.7 4L80E: -------- 2.48 ----- 1.48 ------- 1 --------- 0.75 heres an example from the BTO site heres a rpm/tranny comparison on their site, fun to play with http://700r4.com/speedoCalc/rpmcalc.shtml |

I would love to do a manual. I just love to dirve them and it is going to be cheaper than a auto. here is a list to do auto and manual.
Auto: 1. new tranny w od. 300 2. build it 400 3. converter 2004.shifter 100 5. TOTAL======1,000.00 Manual: 1.New tranny 400 tops 2.flywheel 100 3.clutch kit 200 4.TOTAL=======700.00 tops if I need a clutch. My truck use to be a manual so everything is there. |

Re: 2001 nv3500 with pre 86 motor? help
and if your engine makes any sort of respectable power, an nv3500 is going to shit the bed on you, theyre only rated to like 300 ft lbs of torque and the gearset in them is designed for a heavier truck, first gear is rediculously low, in the 4 or 5's somewhere, with your 3.73 rearend you wont be able to use first at all, itll wind up to 6k and go 3mph
if you want a durable manual, you need something like a muncie m22 rockcrusher, but its 4th gear isnt overdrive... if you want the OD youll need something like a t5 or t-56... none of which is cheap to buy or cheap to beef up |

Re: 2001 nv3500 with pre 86 motor? help
yeah I have done my research on how much power they will hold. Maybe you should research just how strong they are. Some guys have been using them for years behind motors with 400-500hp. I guess its how you drive. Some of the nv3500 do have different gear ratios as well. The ones in the 1500 are geared very high because of the weight i guess but the ones in the s10s are not that bad. Thanks for the advise though. Also these trannys are a dime a dozen here in fl. I blow it up, screw it get another one. Im picking one up in a couple weeks for 300 for everything.
thank you, |

im just saying what ive been told, i work in a hot rod shop and a friend of mine runs a tranny shop, and neither my boss or the other guy thinks much of the nv3500, theres better out there... but all 3 of us also beat the hell out of our vehicles, so stuff has to be strong... if you baby it, it will probably be fine

Re: 2001 nv3500 with pre 86 motor? help
Well like I said I am done beating the truck. Its makes some power though best time was 12.2 at 118. Not bad for a vortec headed small block POS. I am just making it into a show truck done with all the racing. I got friends with cars that run in the 8s and 9s so Ill just watch them break their stuff. Its always more fun when your not paying for it. I know i could buy a better trans but for what I am going to be doing it will be fine. Like I said these trans are a dime a dozen and I could rip the damn thing out and install a new one in a few hours.
